I have a 2006 silverado 4.8 v8,and I travel about 50 to 60 miles roundtrip for to work . I've used castrol dino 5w30 and recently penzoil platnum 5w30. Price isn't an issue. What is the best for a this truck in your opinion or does anyone have data backing up any particular brand with this motor.I would prefer to use 10w30, but I'm afraid to switch because my owner's manual states 5w30 unlike my old chevy which said 5w30 for colder climates and 10w30 for hotter. I stay in louisiana where it seldoms fets below 40 degrees in the winter. Thanks for any replys.

There is a forum on this site with the answer. All you need to know about oil is GC.
Seriously, though, why not use PP 5W-30? It has had some great UOAs, the price is right, and it is widely available.
What OCI do you plan on using? With the type of driving you are doing, and the climate in which you operate, you would likely be a prime candidate for an extended OCI. Why not go a reasonable distance on PP, have a UOA done, and open up the envelope from there?

How long is your OCI?
What percentage of highway miles do you drive?

Unless you are a first & last owner of that vehicle, finding out what's best can take some time... sometimes years. Your engine decides what's best anyways. You help that decision-making using your ears listening for engine quietness & your eyes watching for consumption issues, product-pricing and cleanliness.

Pick one and GO! Lots to choose from!

Schaefers

Mobil-1 EP
etc...etc...etc.

Check out Bill in Utah UOA's on his chevy. He uses the cheapest SM oil he can find. Normally Pennzoil and Chevron and Supertech Filters and 5K OCI's. I have to say that I used that combo in the past but 7-9K OCI's. Check out the UOA of an 5.3 Silverado and it was about 11K on the havoline that he was using. So if you want to change your oil whenever your OLM says so or less than 7K use your favorite SM 5W-30 and either a Supertech or AC Delco filter. Both Filters are more or less the same.

Thanks for the info, The engine runs like a top and I use purolator plus oil filters. No valvetrain noise at start up or oil consumption. I plan on doing a 4k to 5k interval. thanks for the reply.

I have the 5.3L V8 engine in a Sierra 4X4 and run 5W-30 in the winter & 10W-30 in spring-summer-fall in Wisconsin.

You should have zero problems with a 10W-30 if the coldest temps you see are 40 degrees F.

The GM V8's are relatively low RPM engines and the somewhat thicker start-up viscosity of a 10W-30 is not noticeable at temps of 40 degrees F & warmer.

Havoline, Pennzoil & Castrol GTX are all great choices, disregard the OLM and stay at 5K-6K OCI's.

Wait for a good sale and stock-up on any name-brand. Myself, I use/try many different oils because I like to, just like I try different tires, rather than stick with one. When I find a good reliable product, be it tire of oil, that's what I use in other people's cars and then "test" new ones on mine.

Hi,

I have the same engine in my 2k 4x4 ext cab Truck (and my Moms 2002 same truck) and I've run Mobil 1, Pennzoil conventional and Chevron conventional and run UOAs @ 4k miles.

(I've run other brands (castrol GTX and QS) but have not done UOAs yet)

The Chevron did the best (here is the UOA Chevron UOA ) and so far the Mobil one did the worst.

I run 10w-30 from spring to late fall and 5w-30 in the winter. Here it gets in the 90s to 100s for months on end.

Once I run out of 10w-30, I'll go back to 5w-30 all year round. I've seen that 5w-30 does fine year round and like the thought of having only on grade of oil in the stash. (My toyota, Uncles PT Cruiser/Caravan and Sisters Caravan only see 5w-30)

I had one valve cover off around 40k (leak) and everything is spotless(no color, nothing) . I can look in the oil fill tube and it's still perfect @ 50k.

I don't drive the truck that much (it's got 50k on it and 7 years old) and it sees too much 2-3 mile round trips. I'm going to try to drive it to work (50 miles one way) atleast every other week this next year.

Unless gas goes way up.

So, for me (who maintains 2 of the 4.8l in the family) I'd go with good old conventional Sl/SM and change it per OLM or 6 months.

Take care, bill

Again guys thanks for the info.I just bought 6 qts of Penzoil Plat @ walmart 3.80 a qt.The 5 gal. jug was 18.97 And then i went to Sam's Club next door and they had a 6qt case of castrol Syntec black bottle for 25.96, the mobil 1 was 29.16 . I think I'll stick with the PP and get a Oil analysis done at 4k to 5k. Again thanks for the info

You said price is not an issue, which I take that to mean you want the best money can buy. Amsoil 5w30 and Amsoil Ae oil filter. Order from the site sponsor here on BITOG.....

I think I would have to agree at some level. For longer drain intervals probably about as good as gets. Some others are in the ballpark right there. But really a great combination. If you are a 3M/3K guy then Dino will be fine.
