Scrapping Desktop - How To Safeguard Data?

I take mine to a recycling facility that has a huge shredder. $6 a disk and I can watch them get shredded.

At work we pay a $100 annual membership fee and it then costs $2 per disk to shred, with certificates issued, with serial numbers.

Overwrite it using a Linux distro and encrypt the disk during the install.
I decommissioned the last of my hard drives back in the late 2010s, making passes with shred on all the files. And it also involved removing the platter, degaussing, scratching the platters up, sledgehammer, and a torch.

Then I threw what was left away.

Due to the nature of shred, you should only use it on hard drives. On SSDs and other flash memory it will just hammer the drive and wear it out.
