Schaeffer's #267 and older GM 10 bolt

Would switching to Schaeffer's #267 in a differential that is 17 years old be likely to cause leaks ???

I have a 1988 GMC Suburban with 10 bolt differential. As far as I know, it is the original with no work done on it. No leaks. Only problem is a very slight whine.

I have been using valvoline gear lube, changing about once a year which comes out to about 10,000 miles per year. I have owned it for 5 years, about 50,000 miles. Occassional light towing, in Colorado mountains. Also the 700R4 transmission shift pretty crisp on up and down shifts which I would think is putting some shock load on the gears.

I really have no problem with valvoline lube and have used it for many years with success. But have noticed that Schaeffer's #267 is well liked on this forum.

I am about ready to change the differential fluid on the old burb, and am considering the Schaeffer's #267. Maybe it could help with the whine. The whine is not really bad, but I can hear it. From what I have heard from others, this whine could have been there the day it drove off the dealers lot.

The Schaeffer's #267 is a synthetic or synthetic blend, right ???

My worry is that the Schaeffer's #267 could cause leaks. IS this a valid concern ???

I doubt it, but its possible. I switched to RP max-gear is a 20 year old 8.5 10 bolt rear end, and didn't have a problem.

I don't think you'll have any concern about leaks. Yes, 267 is a synthetic blend. It is a very heavy duty gear oil. If you have a bearing starting to go bad or gear tooth wear causing that whine 267 might add life to the differential. I use it.

When I had the '86 Burrb 10-bolt I used Schaeffer's 267 without any problems. Quieted down the AUburn LSD really well.

Addendum: Eventually you will need to have the drive pinion shimpacks replaced.
