9600 miles on the oil, 14 months, 59,600 miles on the engine
2001 Toyota Tundra 4.7L V-8
Schaeffer #9000 5W-40 synthetic oil
Toyota (Denso) oil & air filters (part with True-Flow air filter)
Summer & winter mountain towing, highway, & city driving
Stavely Services testing lab

Wear metals:
Iron---16 ppm (1.66 ppm per 1000 miles; my limit is 3.5)
Chromium---1 ppm
Lead---13 ppm
Copper---22 ppm (leaching from the oil cooler)
Tin---4 ppm
Aluminum---5 ppm
Nickel---0
Silver---0

Additives:
Silicon---13 ppm (from dirt...silica, or silane antifoamant)
Boron---1 ppm
Sodium---7 ppm
Magnesium---13 ppm
Calcium---3030 ppm
Barium---2 ppm
Phosphorus---1184 ppm
Zinc---1317 ppm
Molybdenum---282 ppm
Titanium---0
Vanadium---0
Potassium---0

Physical properties:
Fuel---less than 0.5%
Viscosity @ 100°C---13.5 centistokes (40 wt.)
Water---0
Soot & solids---0.6%
Coolant---none

Oil deterioration:
Oxidation---less than 1%
Nitration---less than 1%
Total base number---3.8
Analysis Recommendations:
"No corrective action required."

I'll change this oil & filter soon. There is nothing wrong with this oil, but the active additives will be depleted by 15,000, and I have good weather now for the work. I'm pleased with this report. I do like Schaeffer's products. I got rid of the TrueFlow air filter because it made no difference in performance, and it may have been partly responsible for the silicon level.

You wear is not excessive. However, the winter weather and the towing seemed to have elevated your numbers a little. I suspect that your number will go down in warmer weather.

For this engine type this is a very poor UOA. I think it is the duration. I have noticed that most excellent UOA's on this engine have an OCI of 9 months or less. To date every 12,13,14 month OCI on this engine that I have seen has been rather poor.Everything after the Iron is out of place for the milage on this OCI.

I don't think it's the duration so much as it's the service. There's nothing wrong with the oil. Visc is fine, TBN ..somehow the Oxi and Nitration numbers don't flush ..but I've never figured them out anyway. Pb would be the only thing that I'd be nervous with ..and even that would just be a BITOG nervous reaction.

Any vehicle that tows in a moutain environment would be expected to wear at a higher rate then one commuting as a daily driver ..or so I would reason. I doubt that anything is going to stop all the side effects of severe service even with frequent oil changes.

Now whether this can be improved upon is another story.

Ken,

You're welcome to ask Terry Dyson, but I certainly wouldn't try to run this oil for 5000 more miles, at least without a filter change and topoff. A total solids level of 0.6% is fairly high for a gasser and indicates the oil is actually getting somewhat abrasive. A TBN < 4.0 from Stavely is also marginal in terms of acid neutralization - that's about a 2.0 from Blackstone, for example.

I'd expect to see a marked increase in Pb/Sn levels if you ran that total solids level up near 1.0%. Been there and done that with Amsoil and didn't like the results....

Wow, so it IS possible to get one of these engines to show wear.

I'll cut to the chase because Ken2 has with me in the past.

Your Pb and Sn are too high, the solids are what? 0.6% - this is not so good for a Toyota engine. I would go 6 months with this oil if you are towing.

Boy oh boy. When 13 ppm of lead is high on any engine with 9.6k and 14 months in less than ideal conditions, well...I think we have taken anal-izing to another level.

i just like seeing that gremlin.

I agree that 13ppm Pb is not out of control. But the combination of the Pb, Sn and 0.6% solids would have been soundly ridiculed if the oil brand name started with an A or M and maybe even R.

I stand by my 6 month recommendation for these conditions.

I'll go with the insolubles ..but if you shaved all this in half at half the mileage, I think everyone would just feel better about the lower numbers. No one likes double digit Pb under any circumstances. If it was 20k double digit Pb would get some excited.

..but there's nothing to lose except some $$ by dropping back and punting at half the distance to the goal line.

Most vechiles do not show that much increased wear from towing so long as they are within the manufactures GVWR. I think that this oil and OCI are not ideal for this engine. I think that if he cut the time to 6 months we would see a huge improvement. No one is saying tht these numbers are insanely high just that they do not match up with most of this engine model.

Sales Rep even though we all love Schaffers Oils and their other products it does not mean they can do great job all of the time on extended OCI's!!! This is the first less then stellar UOA I have seen with Schaffers Oil. If we look at the other Tundra UOA's all of the bad ones had the oil in use longer then 9 months!

I'd back off the Oci to 7500mi and switch to cheaper 7000. The blends tend to show slightly better #s but won't last as long. Your circumstances seem perfect for the switch. Maybe also try some LC for the insolubles.

I realize that this is a challenging pattern of usage to say the least, and considering how other engines perform, the numbers would not be too alarming. As other have noted, however, this is a UZ series V-8 engine, which normally leaves hardly more than traces of wear metal in the oil. I've sampled ours, also in 01 (but installed in a Sequoia), several times, and never seen anything like this. I know that his use is more challenging than ours, but still, I'd be concerned (not paniced) and would keep an eye on this one just in case something's up.

It's not the oil or the miles on the oil that's key here, it's the 14 months of service. Once the oil contains byproducts of combustion, corrosive wear occurs even with the engine just sitting there, abeit at a much slower rate.

I did change the oil and filter...using Schaeffer 5W-30 syn blend for this winter and no towing.

The lead, copper, and aluminum are higher than other tests with similar mileage but fewer months. This TBN is lower than that other run.

I agree, this might not be the best oil for this engine and I may have maxed-out the duration.

Ken

I've been absent for a while now, but the Seq just crossed 100K a couple of weeks back... time for a UOA. I'll be posting soon.

Oh BTW... I hope my numbers look better than these. Any double digit metal wear in this engine looks unusual.

with 112k, on the engine and 13k/11months on the oil, with both towing and high speed runs on the truck, i had numbers that were close to half these numbers. differences were M1 5w-20 and a M1 filter (i don't think it was the filter, toyota factory filters are some of the best filters made, i just hate the local dealer). this engine REALLY doesn't like this oil.
