I have a couple of scan tools, one cheepie that works fine on my '08 Sienna, and a the AutoEnginuity software for my laptop. I have a 2000 Ram with the 5.9 cummins that is recognized by both of these tools, but the cheepie is worthless for it and the AE only slightly better. The AE will read codes, but will only give me a few sensor readings out of the many dozens if not scores more that exist.

Both these recognize the protocol as ISO 9141-2. Do any of you know of a scan tool that will work well for this vehicle? I don't mind spending hundreds, but thousands is not in the cards.

Honestly, if you can find an old Modis it's one of the few that'll get ABS codes on the Ram.

However I actually don't know if a new upper-end Autel, etc will do it. I should see if my Otofix tablet can do it.

That truck uses SCI and CCD. Majority of the truck is CCD, SCI is chrysler PCM and cummins ECM only for emissions compliance. Newer tools do not do CCD very well, a Snapon tool, or an old Mastertech would likely be the best options. I use a DRB III which was the factory tool. The reason your cheapie tools are identifying ISO 9141-2 (K-line) is because one of the SCI pins is pin 7 so the tool is seeing voltage on pin 7 and calling it K line
