Saw a Yaris Sedan on the road today, it was kewl.

For the record, I wasn't being serious. It's too bad you can't convey unspoken emotions on internet forums. Smilies have their limitations, too. The Yugo story is quite true, though.

Don't get me started on YUGO's. I have to get a picture of a Police Departments version of a police car by me. The Castle Shannon Police Department has a Yugo painted up as a Black and White Police car with a working light bar on top.

I guess they take it to schools to talk to the kids about Police work.

No, that would be the Festiva.

Sorry Matt, thought you were being serious,
I remember a blurb about the Yugo,
I have heard stories of driving a bike over the bridge, made them real nervous at times.
Someone told me about someone driving an old Beetle on I-75 near Nine Mile Road, north of Detroit, there is a twist on the Freeway, a wind caught them and moved them one lane over, they were not speeding either

Car and Driver says it was light but the suspension was poorly tuned. Lots of body roll and hard to drive in windy conditions. They tested the Yaris S, the sport suspension equipped model. If it felt like that with the S, I don't wanna think about the regular model. It lost to the new Kia Rio5, Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit. They went on to make fun of the center mounted gauges. Toyota needs to stop with it... if they want it to be considered a serious vehicle for communters, the center mounted dash needs to go and make it seem like a car, not a toy.

Between this and luvs2drive's comments about the suspension, you'd better be careful driving one of these on the Mackinac Bridge (linking the upper and lower peninsula's of Michigan). I remember a news report a number of years back that a Yugo literally got blown right off the bridge on a windy day. It's a long way down to the water, too. That's when they started 25 mph speed limits on windy days and offering escorts across the bridge (someone will drive for you if you'd like).

the Yaris(2100-2300lbs) is not that lite. It's heavier than any Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift(1600-1950lbs)(my first Metro-88-was only 1560lbs)

I dunno... my saab has the radio and MPG, temp, etc. controls in the center of the top of the dash.

I kind of like it for not having to make my eyes stray as much when driving along.

Looking down to look at the radio in the rental car I now have for work is a big difference!

Now, for a speedometer it may be a different dynamic... I havent tried, so I cant say... but having it up more, even if centered, seems like a smart idea.

Didnt pontiac offer a 'HUD' for a while, so drivers' eyes didnt need to stray as much???

I drove a car that had one and I had to physically look over to see the speedo more so than in any of the other vehicles I've driven. It was a Saturn Ion. Not a big fan. When you drive, you don't really look at the center of the windshield do you? The GM HUD displays it directly on the driver's side of the windshield, not the center of the windshield. I have a lot of other electronic devices in the center stack of my Jeep but i consider those auxiliary devices compared to my instrument cluster.

When i said center of the dash, I mean dead center. It has a slight angle so you can "see it better" but you still have to look over at it. Nissan realized this flaw with the Quest after realizing buyers were turning their van away for that sole reason.

I kinda liked the Saturn's center speedo. A lot of times I drive with my hand on the top of the steering wheel (bad habit I guess) and have to move my hand to see the speedo.

I understand that it is smack in the centr of the dash, but IMO, its still less of a deviation of the eyes than dwn between the steering wheel.

At the same time, there must be a reason why saab, some of the top ergonomic experts, put radio and MPG, temp, etc info there, and no tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, etc.

Maybe its just me, but it seems that center mounted (as silly as it looks in the echo/yaris, allows you to keep 'one' eye on the road a little better than the normal placement... mabe its just me though

Yaris? No thanks. Great as a tiny inner-city commuter, but that's it. It's styling looks like the southbound end of a north-bound horse.

A base Cobalt (no center IP) or Saturn ION (center IP) runs $13-14K, Cobalt is cheaper with incentives and dealers who will negotiate. And they both look a WHOLE bunch better than the Yaris.

OT: Saw a bright ping VW Thing this week. 2 blondes driving it. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry...

I'm in agreement with ToyotaNSaturn. The Yaris offers very little car for the money and is vastly targeted toward the younger/less affluent buyers who are looking for a lower cost car to start with. Upon close examination, one can easily see "how little car" the Yaris and/or Fit offers for the money. For about the same amount of money, one can purchase a Cobalt or ION, which will have much more room, nearly as good fuel efficiency, and a more powerful engine. In addition, for $15,000, instead of the Honda FIT, I would much rather purchase a Chevy HHR.

It was a trip from Amsterdam to Paris
Perfect, one would think, for taking my new Yaris
The road is straight but parking is a bummer
I know, I could park it 'neath a Hummer

So on to Le Tour Eiffel I flew
Past Ile de la Cité too
I avoided the Louvre and Place de la Concorde
'Cause this was a Yaris and not a Ford

Then I knew what next I'd do
Drive the Champs Elysées and the Pont Royal too
But it was there that my day came to a frightening end
I was blown off the Pont by an embarassing wind.

I dont like the fit's highway fuel economy, but I think id like the vehicle... the value seems reasonable. The yaris doesnt seem so.

For the $13-14k for a Yaris, you could likely get a low end corolla, with relatively same fuel economy numbers... and lets face it, if you need to buy an economy car because its all that you can afford, then you really shouldnt be thinking about buying power windows, power door locks, spoilers, aero add ons, and 'S' packages... you should be buying a basic economy car. Which Ill bet you can get in a corolla form for $11k or so.

How much less is an aveo than a yaris though??? Last I saw the local chevy dealer was offering aveos for $8995 or so...

Based upon friends' tercel longevities, I wouldnt count on a yaris to last that far over 100k... so comparing its longevity to a daewoo Aveo is moot IMO. Id buy for price!

I wonder what the aveo economy is...

JMH

OK, the aveo's economy stinks... worse than the honda fit... only 35 MPG highway.

What the heck is a chevy optra and chevy epica??? theyre listed on the fuel economy guide for 06, yet I didnt see them on the chevy site...
