I'm curious, at what point do you buy a new blade for a mower?

For me, a mower blade lasts many years. The only time they get replaced is if they are bent by hitting something, or if they have been sharpened so many times that the blade is worn way down.

I bought new ones because I could tell one was really out of balance and probably contributed to my worn out spindle bearings.
