Same engine in my 96. I am probably gonna have the valve cover off soon when I do the timing chain. I hope all the synthetic I've done recently has made it look nice :D

What's wrong with your timing chain?

The OP's picture looks fine. That's how mine looked at about 94,000 miles, minus the heavier varnish along the middle. And I had done 6-9k intervals on dino.
 
The DOHC heads stay cleaner for some reason. The PCV system only directly ventilates cyls 3 and 4 and on SOHC heads heavy black varnish covers the rocker arms on 1 and 2.

Also the lost styro-foam castings are cool to look at if you've never seen one before.
 
Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with that engine. Maybe varnish is actually the key to getting high mileage....helps hold things together......
