When the thermostat is closed (which we would consider "warm up") the engine is going to warm up in the same amount of time regardless of whether it has a 185 or 195 thermostat in it.

Regarding closed loop, you are spot-on. Though usually this temperature is much lower than that of the thermostat.

Well I'd like 195 for a little better fuel mileage and maybe then I would have condensation on my oil cap. Only a maybe. I do some short trips but most of my trips are 15 miles or so . So why I have residue idk but I'm trying to curb it.

Your fuel economy will not change with a 195, but feel free to go that route. Also short trips will cause the condensation as well. In your case its more than likely your engine running too cool.

I went out and really looked when warm my temp gauge reads a hair below half way between 1/2 and 1/4. My heater is blowing at around 140 degrees and the outside temp is around 30. Everything sounds ok. But I don't understand wht oriellys sells 185 as oe if it is in fact 195.

It may be a few degrees lower than the Stant.

Did you see my post? The Stant for instance says 188F, but it's a 195F.

Does it have a Polymer ECTS or Copper? If Polymer, you MUST replace it! If Copper, it's already been replaced and should be ok, unless you screw it out and find it cracked...

I replaced the ects a month ago. I drove ten miles this morning and then let my car sit in the driveway for 15 mins with the heater on the idle never went to where it is when warm and it wouldn't warm up past 1/4 my guess is the thermostat cracks open at the 1/4 mark and since its cold it keeps the car cool

Advance auto has the stant Thermostat that I need. But they dont have the housing. Will i I need to replace the housing since the thermostat I bought came with the housing

These engines don't keep the heat in! IDK if it's the mass of aluminum, the relatively uncramped quarters, the fact that more gasoline turns into propulsion and less is wasted. But if I have my blower fan above 2 at idle it brings the engine temp down. Coasting down a hill (stick shift) with fuel shut off brings the temp down. Get the hottest thermostat you can find!

Expecting a Stant to be delivered today for my son's 2000 SL2. Along with ECTS and a valve cover gasket. Temperature hasn't really been into the double didgits since he got it and the temperature gauge hasn't moved above 1/4. That will be going in this weekend with fresh coolant and another oil change with PC 0w30 and an oversized Baldwin. Tranny filters should be in by now too so that flush will probably happen then as well.

OE was 185, I pulled the original thermostat from my 97 SL1 a few years ago and it was a 185. I replaced it with another 185 from the dealer and engine temp was back where it should be. 195 thermostats show about the same on the gauge roughly, and not much else.

You can use the Motorad thermostat. I have a friend who used one on a 98 DOHC. It will work. Change it up!

Right now I have a moto rad Thermostat. When I bought it , it came pre installed in the housing. I can get a stant 195 at advance but it doesn't come with a housing . Can I buy a stant and put it in the moto rad housing? Everything I read says 188 is factory . It cracks open at 188 and is open almost fully at 195 mine completely opens at 185 so its several degrees lower.

Well gm say anything from 82c to 88c is in spec and that the 185 will work fine like some said but since they have aluminum engines and aren't cramped under the hood and for a few other reason they don't stay warm . He said put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator.

Just use your factory thermostat housing. Return the motorad if you want to use the Stant.

The thermostats minus housing come with a cardboard tube used to install the thermostat into the factory stat housing. It is an extremely simple process.

I don't have the factory Thermostat housing. When I bought the car it had a motorad on it I replaced it for the same thing.

I have no idea if they can be separated or not (the moto rad housing and the thermostat in it) so maybe just hit up a wreckers and yank one off an S-series. All years, SOHC and DOHC are the same. It's 2 10mm bolts, should be able to score one for about 5 mins work.

Dude, you missed it again! The 188 is the same as 195!
