apparently a day after I built my new computer Its going back..

the news per tomshardware

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/cougar-point-sandy-bridge-sata-error,12108.html

first my old computer dies now this.. a bad week in the computer room :\

This is kinda why I refuse to buy the absolute latest and greatest. I always wait for "second gen" or the first revision.

Unfortunate, but at least it's correctable. I opted for a Core i7-950 last month.

Problem is not as bad as it sounds nor does it involve all motherboards. No problems with Sandy Bridge Processors either.

Link to article.

Big problem is a black eye for Intel.

AMD will be releasing the new Bulldozer processor soon. Am sure they are jumping up and down for joy right about now!

so how did intel arrive at this 5% number

did they assume 90% of computers only have 1 hdd and 1 optical drive and use the unaffected sata 6gb/s ports?

and 50% of the ones with with 6 hdd's in 2 raid arrays on the affected ports fail?

statistics are basically lies you can make them whatever you want.

Regardless I dont want to mess around with this possibly failing.

and no replacement motherboards till about april.

newegg said they would do a full refund on all the parts in my build.. hurray newegg.. back it goes.

plan b I found an old ip35 pro motherboard at a local shop for 79$ and im back in business.

Hopefully this cobbled together q6600 system lasts me another 6monthes-year then I probably hop ship to a z68chipset anyway

the current ones are semi retarded/fail.
with the whole built in graphics/no oc, or oc no built in graphics.
(I could explain farther but its rambling here already)

Newegg keeps it real with the customer support. They made a mistake on one of my orders once and I raised [censored] when I had to pay some kind of restocking fee - they ended up giving me a $150 switch free (and I didn't pay the restocking fee).

Got my i7 2600K sitting on my desk all lonely now.
Had a Gigabyte P67A-UD4 on order but I told my supplier to send it back.
Looks like my current i7 will have to do until April/May.

When I saw the title of this thread I had the sinking feeling you have when you just spent a wad of cash and now your going to probably go through customer NO service [censored] to get things straightened out ..

I automatically thought it covered all core i5 series .

Thankfully I checked my processor and chip set in my only two month old HP p6680t which I purchased in early Decenmber 2010. I just missed the cut off for the new chip set series by a month~~~~ phew~~~~ I got the Capella series or 1st gen core i5!!!

I once again dodged a bullet!

well the new ones are about 30% faster so I hope you got a good deal.

I did that last year got the last core2 series from lenovo before the i5/i7

1360laptop for 600$

still an awsome laptop. I dont play games on it so its not likely to ever be too slow till it dies.

i absolutely HATE this!! i had my newegg shopping cart all ready to go for when i get my tax money, but now it looks like ill just be getting a $500 gift card and sitting on it for a couple/few months...

Yep!

Got this HP pavilion desktop i5 quad with 6 Gig for just over 800 bucks WITH a factory HP 3 yr warranty.

I'm not a gamer either so I'm sure it will provide me with many years of service. My previous desktop an HP pavilion 7955 from 2001 is still quite functional and fairly fast but it is nearing the end of its useful life so I fignured I'd jump at this deal.

I just can't bring myself to buy a laptop or netbook because they simply just don't last that long for the price you pay.

Why not put the money in the bank until needed? What goos is money tied up on a gift card?

I am not worried about the chipset issue at all. Once the new revised boards are out I will simply do an advanced rma with gigabyte. I mostly use the 6GB ports anyway and those ports are not affected. Only thing on the 3GB ports are a storage drive and my blu-ray burner.
