Samsung or LG smart TV now or in January?

I JUST picked up a brand new LG 55LA7400 from Micro Center for a steal, only $899 and another hundred off since I have a MC credit card. It's a mid year 13 model, and ignoring 4K/OLED, the 2nd highest in their entire lineup. Retail is usually $2200, and MSRP is 2799.
If you have a Micro Center near you, get one! I calibrate all my displays, hardware calibration, and it took less than 20min to get results that put this as one of the most color accurate TV's I've ever seen, and the ACTUAL contrast ratio (all the dynamiceeverything turned off) is 6038:1!
I am incredibly impressed with the set, and I am very critical of display quality...

Screw the Roku, I have one. While neat, I erally don't use more than Pandora and Netflix. I also bought a Google Chromecast. For $35, it CANNOT be beat. I just hope they add a web browser to it.

You can mirror a tab from a Chrome browser to the Chromecast.

I think 32 inch to 40 is my sweet spot... maybe 46. I was thinking smart TV. I'll settle for for a TV that's not dumb.

That doesn't help when I'm sitting on the couch though with my tablet or phone. I want an actual web browser. Even if I could get them to cast a tab from android to the Chromecast, that would be a huge step up.

I particularly like the picture on the nicer "Sharp" TV's. They do a better job matching real colors. So, I avoid the other brands. All the other functionality is not important to me. I can get it other ways. Including via laptop, apple tv, Roku and so on.

Agreed.
I thought that my 52" Sharp Aquos I bought 6-7 years ago was "Real Big" at that time, now I think I like 70-80" better because 60-65" is not big enough.
If you think 40-46" is the right size for your viewing distance, get 50-55" and you won't regret 3-4 years later. You can get a good quality 55" for less than $1k.

I got a new LG 47LN5400 a couple of months ago. The picture is good but the audio quality is not acceptable. Not poor, it's unacceptable.
I talked to LG Customer service a few times and they sent a tech out to the house. No Fault Found. Customer service said I would have to buy a sound bar if I wanted better audio ....
I popped the back off the TV and cut the wires to the cheap speakers in the cabinet. I had an old pair of Radio Shack Minimus 7 speakers from years ago and I ran the speaker wires out of the cabinet to them. They sound GREAT !
When I was in BestBuy getting the TV I never thought to check the audio quality on the demo TV in the store.

Keep in mind that whatever size you get, most WS movies in 1080p will NOT FILL the whole screen - their original aspect ratio is 'narrower' / skinnier than 16:9 which the TV screen is- you will have several blank inches top and and bottom for the black bars in WS mode - sure you can do 'full screen' setting but then you lose actual MATERIAL from left and right.
SO, get whatever largest you can afford. I thought our 40" was huge in our old apartment, and when we moved to a bigger place, now the TV is in a larger lvg room and looks smaller ESP. on WS format. Now I wish I had a 55"or 60" LCD ! (which I will upgrade to next year probably) So keep this in mind. you get used to size and viewing area VERY quickly.
Can't/shouldn't expect anything other than mediocre audio from a flat panel - That's why I have my blu ray player connected to the main audio system for movies etc. TV speakers are ok for news and talk shows, that's it.

This LG is a replacement for a Sharp flat screen that was damaged by lightning.
I would settle for mediocre audio but not unacceptable ... it was painful to listen to.

Anybody picked up the door buster 55 LG from Best Buy? The box in which it came was "one-way" only. I was expecting a better quality but for $500 I can't really complain. The size in jump from our existing 32" 720p Sony to this sort of worth it. I have not tweaked with the picture settings on the LG.
The "boss" likes it and she wanted the big TV to be used as picture frame (!) so it is staying. Besides, the box it came in had NO bottom, so no Humpty Dumpty can put the TV back in the box and carry it back to the store ever again!

I bought a Samsung smart TV 6350 series 46" screen size. 629$ @ Costco with no tax in Oregon.
Pretty happy with it so far. The sound is not bad at all. Just watched my first Seahawks game on it. I'll be hooking into my stereo at some point.
I have it hooked into the internet through the cat 5 cable. I like the internet features so far. Got it hooked up and watched "Flight" with Denzal Washington last night. Pretty good movie.........

Did you also purchase the extended warranty? For TVs $500-$1000 it's $59.99 from Costco for a Square Trade warranty. It adds 3 years to the 2 Year Costco Concierge warranty for a total of 5 years. I realize that most probably think that an extended warranty is a rip-off, but at that price it's hard to beat. On a side note we put a hurtin' on the Saints

The price of TV is dropping about 25-30% a year, after 2 years a new TV can be bought for about 1/2 of current price, a 2 years old used TV is worth about 1/2 of that amount which is 1/4 of current price. Paying $60 for a TV valued at around $150 is not very good purchase. Also, if a TV is working well for the first 2 years chance is it will not brake down after that.
Yes the Hawks kicked booty. I have never used an extended warranty. Have not been sorry yet.

Question: are SmartTV's any better these days? Our Samsung from '09 is awful slow with Smart TV apps.
We just picked up a $60 Sony Blu-Ray player that has a few apps on it, including Netflix. Wifey is very happy with the performance and quality of the Smart TV apps on this cheap player compared to the TV and even a Roku 2.
