British Teen Lands in Antigua After Record-Breaking Sail Across Atlantic

A quote from Mom: “I did get quite scared when I found out he had to tie a rope around his waist and dive into the water to fix something, and when he was talking about sharks. But you cannot expect your kids not to go out. You don’t want them staying at home, fixed to the computer. They need to be out there, fulfilling their ambitions, otherwise life will pass them by. I just wish more kids had the opportunity to do these things.”

Now there's a kid who'll never again have any trouble with the concepts of cause & effect. Something went wrong? Fix it the best you can with what you have & move on. Go get 'em Mike.

Which reminds me- does anyone remember Tania Aebi? She was mighty young when she sailed around the world alone. IIRC, was denied recognition by some because she gave a lift to someone for a small leg of the journey.

And let's not forget the master, Joshua Slocum! He did it long ago in a wooden boat that he rebuilt himself. His book, Sailing Alone Around the World , is still a classic worth reading by anyone who has a single red blood cell left.

Impressive feat.

Hope that as a parent I can provide support should my kids decide tha they are gonna do something that scares the tripe out of me.

When I was involve with harmonic conditioners, the president of the company told me of how he and his first wife sailed from the west coast to Hawaii ..just the two of them. I don't know how big the sail boat was ..but to be crewed by the two of them it wasn't all that big.

He said when they got there, she stepped on to the dock and said "I never want to see you again." ..and filed for divorce.

Gary,
reminds me of a former girlfriend. When she and her twin sister were 15, her family sold up everything that they had, and bought a sailing boat (her Dad had recovered from Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, and being a former navy diver and a boat head, wanted to share something with his girls).

They bought this boat, and circumnavigated Oz, with a few stops in some of the islands and whatnot.

Took them a year. They got back, sold the boat, and bought a house.
