Rusty Motorcraft oil filter

Hi guys. I changed the oil in my truck today. When I took off the old Motorcraft oil filter, I noticed that the parts around the seal had rusted. Then, I saw that pretty much all around the filter had little spots of rust. I have never seen that before. Is it common?

BTW, the FL-1A was on the truck for 1 year and 1,600 Mi
(its a farm truck)

do they salt your roads ?

I would put a thin amount of grease on the outside of the filter from now on if it rusted that bad.

Every filter on my vehicles tends to show a bit of rust after a full run on the non-painted steel outside of the filter seal. Not anything major, but more of a surface rust. Nothing to worry about for the time frame an oil filter is on. Happens regardless of salt usage season. Has more to do with how wet the filter gets from time to time.

I see it on all the cars I maintain with MC filters...it's normal and harmless.
