I'm going to be doing and ARX on my truck, then slowly extending the drain (with used oil analysis of course) to see how far I can go on Rotella T synthetic 5w-40. Since the stuff is so cheap at WalMart, I was figuring I would just pick up a Motorcraft filter there as well (plus my local parts store doesn't carry Rotella syn, only dino). Are the Motorcrafts ok for extended drains? I'd be using the FL-1A. I know they're pretty much just Purolator Premium Plus filters. I would rather use the Pure One, but Wal Mart doesn't carry them. If I had to, I could get the oil at Walmart and the filter at the parts store, but I'd rather shop all at one place for reasons of simplicity.

BTW, I'm hoping for at least 6,000 miles OCI...if I can go 7,500 that would be even better. So I guess what I'm really asking is should I trust a Motorcraft filter to go 7,500 miles?

I had Motorcraft FL-400S with Mobil 1 in 1994 LS400 with OCI of 1 year/15k miles. I am using Delo 15W40 for 6-8k miles and only change Motorcraft filter every other oil change. Most Honda cars are recommended 10k oil change and filter every other oil change.

I say "yes" with one proviso: I assume the motor is clean (internally) and in good mechanical condition. If so, then any good premium filter, like Motorcraft, WIX, NAPA Gold, etc should easily handle up to 10,000 miles. I do 10k OCIs on my '99 Taurus w/ the 3.0 Vulcan using Pennzoil Platinum and Motorcraft filters. Same for my niece's '99 Contour w/the Zetec 4.

*EDIT* I just remembered...the FL400S for the Taurus and the FL-2005 for the Contour both have a silicon ADBV...I'm not sure I'd run an FL-1A that long since it has a nitrile rubber ADBV. I would think it should go 5,000 miles with no problem, but 10k might be pushing it.

It all depends on how you accumulate your mileage. If you're changing your oil due to mileage ..you can change the filter every other time. If you're changing the oil due to time ..then ditch the filter, it will probably suffer from moisture due to too many short trips/cold starts.

Don't fret about nitrile ADBV unless the startup noise annoys you. It doesn't bother the engine manufacturers ..otherwise, Fram would be a prohibitted part. Even it meets OEM spec's. It's there to stop the media from rapid back flushing and only has to hold for a certain amount of time. Now if your Ford product spec's a "S" filter ..then that's something that you should take into account. The only thing you don't know is if the "S" filter was required just to stop people from complaining about the start up noise.
