The more miles that you plan on racking up, the more you need to pay attention to shoe technology, not shoe fashion. I'm on the larger side, slow, and so far prefer a 'motion control' shoe. I'll buy whatever is on sale as I don't do much distance at all, especially the last six months. I much prefer staying 'impact conditioned' and will keep walking and jogging, but it's balanced with weights as that is just as necessary for 'getting things done'.
Look for a decent show store for runners. I went into about five stores before finding one that even knew what 'motion control' was. The others were pointing out the latest colors or stripes. You can sometimes extend the life of shoe with a different insert, but I usually pull the inserts out and use them as lifting shoes.
