My engine calls for 5-30...would it be safe for me to go to a 0-30 in the winter, and is this viscosity available in a dino?

The M1 0w30 AFE jug says it can be used in vehicles spec'd for 5w and 10w30 without voiding warranties. And its Dexos approved.

I really don't want a syn...too bad it isn't available in a dino...

10w30 anything will be ok, never lost an engine on any oil and many different grades,,once old dollar general stuff,,,worked great..

Just curious - why not?

My engine uses a qt between changes when I run full syn, but doesn't use any measurable amount when I use dino...

Have you given it a couple sequential OCI's on syn to see if that goes away?

And M1 AFE 0w-30 would be suitable for you to run year-round. The only reason NOT to run it might be the price and if you plan on running 3K OCI's or something with it.

Did you stick with the synthetic, or did you change back immediately b/c of the oil consumption?

The reason I ask is this happens to a lot of people, but it usually tapers down and after the second fill everything stays normal.

Also, what synthetic oil were you using? I had the same thing happen to me with M1, but like I said it didn't last long.

There are no base stocks available that would qualify no matter what additive package you used when formulating the oil. There are probably no 0w- rated conventional oils of any viscosity except Group III's which are labeled synthetic.

I use a 0w-30 oil in place of a 5w30 oil because for the same price it's possible that I'm getting better lubrication from a better base stock during warm up and short trip running. It's my 2 vehicles and I foot the maintenance so It's my choice.

Try AFE 0w-30. Lowest consumption (none observable over a 9,000 mile OCI) of anything I've ever run in the Expedition.

A bit OT, but this is good to know.

I picked up a few jugs of this at AZ for the girlfriends Volvo. It doesn't have any noticeable consumption at 3000 miles, but it is a confirmed sludger sadly. On top of the sludge, it is also a turbo so I prefer to use synthetic.. I know the oil can go over 3k, but I just worry the filter could get filled up before then.

The reason an oil passes the low temp 0w cold viscosity rating IS BECAUSE IT'S SYNTHETIC...!

Conventional oil simply can't meet the test criteria at the 0w test temperatures, which are, I believe, -40*c and -35*c, respectively.

I run 5w and 10w-30's in almost anything during the summer months. Switch most back over to their specced 0w and 5w-20's come winter. They don't appear to care at all except occasionally small differences in noise.

If you're driving in cold weather synthetic oil would be a good investment. Even the Amsoil labeled as a straight 30 weight synthetic passes the cold weather test for 10w-30 engine oil with zero VI's.

In a fleet test for cold weather operations, virgin 5w30 and 10w-30 Mobil 1 were tested for cold weather certification and they tested identical. The virgin Mobil 1 0w-30 performed better than the spec sheet and obviously better than the 5w and 10w-30 oil. At the end of the lab and field testing the Mobil 1 0w-30 became their standard oil even for vehicles listed for Xw-20 weight oil.

I was told by their fleet operations manager that Ford approved their selection and there would be no warranty problems because of the 0w-30 substitutions. Warranty coverage would continue to be based on the merits of each case. Most of their Ford vehicles are gas powered pickups and Crown Vic's and some new Explorers.

One interesting note. They have started a program to rebuild some of their Crown Vic's as they wear out. They go completely through them, a contract with a vendor that is doing a lot of Crown Vic refurbishments.

I've driven one and it's like driving a new car. They're tight and rattle free and run straight down the road with a very tight feeling. It's even much cheaper than a new car. Although they are driven in bad weather they see dirt and rural roads and don't see much if any salt. Plus they have a yard full of wrecked and worn out CV's for spares. The CV's are going to die and go away but not without a fight. These people do not like the civilian replacement but are interested in the police spec version for both the sedan and the SUV.
