I'm wondering if anyone's tried this with success. I can get this oil really cheap, so I wonder if it's ok for year round use and 4k or so oil changes?

Sure you can use it. Can I assume that Germantown is the one in my neck of the woods?? It will work fine even in our typical winters ...but it is a tad heavy if you're a short trip type. It may cost you a bit more in fuel (it depends). My son used Delvac 1300 15w-40 last winter. Rotella is just as good a product.

So Gary, do you think the 40w-70 I used to run in my Jeep 258/4.2 litre was a tad on the thick side.

I think it would be fine, I recalkla lot of users a while back running 40wt oils.

Personally, Id use a 5w-40, like rotella synthetic. If you can get plain rotella very cheap, perhaps you can also get the syn very cheap? Its only $13/gal in wal mart, BTW.

Sorry guys, I live in Germantown, TN

I've been running my TJ (which is now knocking on the door of 40k) on a steady diet of M1 10w-30 since 500 miles but I've now had two oil analysis done by blackstone and my iron is high, way high and I'm looking at other alternatives. Last analysis at 3500 miles on the oil showed 49 ppm iron, which scares me.

If you've got exceptionally high Fe ..I would say that you're not in a short trip environment service-wise. M1 tends to give higher Fe readings ..or so many suggest. Mine went from the high 70's for 10k on M1 Xw-30 to under 30 for 10k on Delvac 1 5w-40. Most, but surely not all, who have reduced Fe readings with dino 30 weights, tend to not be highway commuters of any substantial merit - YMMV.

You can use the Rotella 15w-40 year round for 6 month OCI's. I wouldn't worry too much about the mileage interval.

As was suggested, a synth would ease some issues with heavier weight oils ..but 15w-40's worked well in my son's 4.0 into the single digits last winter. The only liability would be pushing a 70 weight (or higher) if you ever saw those temps.

This is just my opinion ..so take it FWIW

Why so light? I'm sure that you can do better than that.

As JHZR2 indicated, Rotella 5W-40 Syn in the blue jug is a very good option.

M1 synthetics tend to produce high iron numbers, so a switch to any other oil will probably result in lower iron levels for the next UOA.

I've been running Rotella 15W40 in my '93 Escort (1.9 4cyl) for the warmer months. It does great, and pretty much eliminated my consumption issue.

I'll probably go to a 5W30 for winter.

In your case, you could use 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for winter service. That would thin viscosity and perhaps do a bit of cleaning at the same time.

15W40 might be a bit too thick on a cold startup with a gas engine. I'd drop down to a 10W30 during the winter and put the 15W40 back in when spring hits.

Or you can just run Shell Rotella Syn 5W40 year round if you can't do without a diesel oil.

oooh, a challenge !
shame it was 15 years ago. I'd been using a 20W-50 until it had a viscosity 'crash' on a 46*C/115*F day, so thicker had to be better, right ?

I wish I'd known about D1 back then.
....and now for some irony. 12-18 months after that I was using 0W-5 in the race car !

Rotella Syn 5w-40 is terrific. I run it all year round in our Infiniti V-8 vehicles, and the '03 GMC Duramax turbodiesel pick-up truck.

The only thing I do not use it in is the old Mercedes "Panzerwagon" 1984 300SD turbodiesel, in which I use 15w-40 Rotella or Delvac 1300 in summer, but the Rotella Syn in winter (but then, that vehicle is a total pig in the snow. No wonder the Germans lost on the eastern front in WW2).

Ouch. Your son's starter, oil pump drive shaft and oil pump are probably not happy on those cold morning starts. I'd be careful.

I just put some pennzoil long life 15W-40 in my sister-in-law's jeep 4.0. It has at least 161k miles on it. It started up fine but it is near AZ and the temps dont get below 40 degree's.
