Rukus R500 or 510. Any good?

I only have experiance with ubiquity and may get a used one of those, but wanted to try another brand that is cheap and commercial quality. My parents dont need much at all. Just email and being able to to use wifi at home for smart phone so they dont use data. They have a very limited data package.

I see rukus does not even have a way to download the latest firmware. You need an account to even dream of downloading it.

Are their products / support any good? They appear to have been bought and sold many many times.
 
Get a refurbished Dell computer from Amazon and set it up. Cheap, reliable and user friendly. That's what I did.

I'd have gotten one of the new unifi routers. You will be supporting this ...
the new stuff isnt too spendy starting at $149 for express 6, could also do express 7, CGU with a wap ., dream router 7 etc.

can remote troubleshoot and support from the cloud with any of those.

as a router and wifi provider?

I am looking for a wifi access point, not a router, not a PC. I have an edgerouter from ubiquity and have custom scripts on it. Not changing that. It works perfect for their use case.
 
Ruckus makes excellent equipment. The 500/510 series is end of life. I currently have a R650, very happy with the performance. However it is overkill for my use, two people and a dog.
Be aware that this is enterprise/commercial equipment and requires some computer network knowledge. You may have to dig around on the internet for help with the setup. Setting up an account is not difficult.
 
HP Enterprise/Aruba Instant On is the way to go IMO. Cloud managed so you can fix it from anywhere using the web app or app on your phone. No license fees or subscriptions of any kind. You can buy them used on eBay if you want to save a few bucks or buy them new online at like Provantage or something.

So to answer the questions above:

Why do they need a new one?
Answer: The 2007 era linksys WAP54G is failing and requires daily reboots due to some kind of hardware failure.

If you are already familiar with Ubiquity, why not a U6+ or a U6 Pro?
Answer: looking for cheap $50 access point, UBNT products are great and near bulletproof but I do not want to spend that much.

I would like cheap end of life comerical grade access point. I have found that these can be commissioned, and just forgot about. They run very reliable without ever needing a power cycle or reset. The fast the R500 / 510 are EOL does not concern me.

Netgear, linksys, trendnet, and all the cheap crap access points that are consumer grade always go EOL after a year or two, and always have some kind of bug that makes a device not connnect, or need frequent power cycles, etc.

If buying used, then the Ruckus is the way to go. You can register for a free account on Ruckus to download any updates.

I recently went through the same exercise. Was looking for a "better" WIFI AP since I have separate firewall/router. Was tired of consumer grade WIFI router because of the issues you mentioned. Ruckus kept coming up as a good option, but I couldn't find a used one for a good price or they were being sold in lots of minimum ten devices. Ended up with a GL-iNet M6000 router but using it as AP only. It will run OpenWRT so should be good for firmware until the hardware craps out.
 
I missed the one for $54. Need another option.

I would need a poe injector or something to power it. I do have the ER-X-POE passthrough router (for home use it is just fine) yes I know the edgerouter 4 is better.
