Rubbing noise

Hi all,

I just replaced the drivers side CV joint in the Hyundai Santa Fe. I also replaced both front outer tie rods and rotors/pads. I counted the threads on the tie rods and put them together the same way. When driving vehicle, if I take a hard turn (like pulling into driveway) there is a rubbing noise. It happens in both directions but worse when turning right. I went to a parking lot that was empty and did some circles in both directions. Noise has mostly gone away now but there is still an occasional knock. I have inspected with a bright light looking for what's rubbing and don't see anything abnormal on either side. I plan to take it in for an alignment tomorrow. Any ideas what this noise could be from?

It could be the poor new alignment situation causing tire scrubbing.

It might be the new CV joint.

Could be both.

The alignment you get tomorrow should help narrow it down.

A brake backing plate you may have accidentally hit or bent into a rotor? Just try reaching through the wheels and pushing the brake shields away from the rotors and go for a ride again.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the brake shields. I may have bumped it when I did the CV shaft (bent it slightly.) I didn't even think of that.

Okay. Had alignment done, suspension inspection and even talked to them about the brake shields. He adjusted the one on the drivers side. Everything looks fine. But......still makes the nosie. Happens when you turn in either direction. Like a rubbing noise. Maybe something with the new brakes? The clips maybe? Or is it possible to buy rotors that are too thick maybe? I'm perplexed. I have done brakes on my cars for years. I don't think it's the new CV shaft, it's something hitting. But turning wheel left or right then inspecting doesn't show an issue. I may just have to take it somewhere. So much for saving money.

I purchased Bendix rotors PRT6036. And Bosch BC1432 pads. They went on fine and braking is great. No noise when braking. Any idea why I am getting a noise turning left or right? Appreciate you guys. Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to add, it is a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS. 2.4L.

This is a long shot, but could you have twisted the brake calipers when reinstalling,
Check the video out (I know not your car but may have a similar setup).

It probably is the brakes. Could be clips, backing plates although seems like it shouldn't be. Anything contacting a rotating part. Anything that the axle mounted to? A brake shim that rubs has happened to everyone. Just takes the time to take it back apart and figure out what went wrong. Don't pay someone yet.

Pad retaining clips. They were right against the outside top edge of rotors. Looked like they could bend to better conform to caliper. I just cleaned the old ones real good, greased them up and popped them in. Gave me almost 1/8" clearance. Retourqued axel nut also. It seemed fine. Put it all back together and pure joy of quietness! Works great. Thank you everyone for your help and encouragement!

Thank Rollinpete. It was driving my wife and I crazy. She had to take our youngest to doctor and they had to drive in a circle up a parking garage. She said she was so embarrassed. I'm just glad I found it. Drove it to store later last night and took long way home. Everything seems fine. Thank goodness.
