RPX ATF???

Hi,

I have a 1983 MB that was originally filled with dexron or dexron II fluid... I am looking to get something compatible with htose two specs, rather than al the newer stuff (I dont know if they are backwards compatible). I saw in my local ABC discount parts store an RPX brand that explicitly states that it is compatible with Dexron, Dexron II/IIE, Dexron III, and Mercon. This seems good, but I dont know much about the fluid. Anyone have any knowledge on this seemingly cheapo brand?
What are the advantages of using a name brand if they dont state that they are dexron II compatible?

A search at the API site has pointed me to AMALIE MOTOR OIL, INC as the holder of RPX's license.

I've got a partial bottle of Castrol Dexron-III and it specifically states on the back that it's backward compatible with Dexron-II. I'd be surprised to see something in print stating that Dexron-III isn't backward compatible with earlier Dexron specs. ("Dexron" is just a GM ATF spec - not a product name. Dexron fluids also happen to be compatible with Ford's "Mercon" spec, but not the company's more recent "Mercon-V" spec.) I believe GM's plan was that as later Dexron specs were developed, drivers of older cars (at least GM) would have a readily available source for ATF and an upgrade path. Somewhat similar to the various API "Sx" categories - you can go forward on older cars, but you shouldn't go backward with newer cars. Contact a Mercedes dealer if you're concerned about the use of Dexron-III in your 1983 Benz and get the proper advice from people who KNOW your car. Personally, I suspect it's perfectly OK and will shift smoother - particularly in low temps. (The newer Dexrons are more stable and resist oxidative varnishing and resultant thickening better.) I believe a newer Dexron-IV spec is in the works for release sometime late this year or early next year.

JHZR2; Dexron III can be used where the old Dexron II or Dexron IIE are required. If you still feel better about using Mercedes Dexron II spec fluid, go to Wal-Mart and look for the Quaker State Mercedes Benz automatic tramission fluid. It is usually on the end shelf all by itself.
