Royal Purple says their oil leaves a film, which is important in lubrication? Any other oils that are known for leaving a good film, im using M1 EP 5w30 but if the oil is that good I may switch over. In a couple months when I change my oil I will get an analysis, Im thinking about putting cheap dino/filter on until I get my results back and then decide what oil I will use depending on the results. What other advantages does Royal purple have?

I use Royal Purple and I am quite satisfied, but, I don't know if their film is better than the next company's film.

RP has some of the worst UOA's around hear. I think it needs to be a couple buck's cheaper to justifiy the price. That is my 2 cents. As for RP oil leaving a film all oil's do that.

RP is very good oil IMO. RP racing oils are highly regarded. Many people that use RP are also doing tear downs, not $20 UOA's.

I've had UOA's with RP and I was very satisfied. I also had UOA's with other oils. I can buy RP about a mile down the street. Plus, it's purple (well, at least for a while)!!!

Very true Buster, they have to tear the engines down to rebuild them due to premature wear....

just kidding, you left your line open so I sent in the right guard

RP is so-so. They seem to get some good insides via the retail catalog crowd. I have seem some few good UOA's and some not worth UOA's. Happens with all oils.

I would say it's not really a long drain oil, it's geared more toward the race crowd. But that's not saying it won't do good at 10K or so, but the few UOA's at longer intervals didn't stick in my brain.

The film stuff is marketing chamber crock.

Pick an angle/feature and work it!

Personally I'm finding that an effective product that's reliable, easy to use and manage after it's usefulness, be easy to get, and having a cost that seems fair...has me using such a product. I also lean towards versatility, and savings in labor/downtime, etc. The most bang for your buck, which is another common sales argument.

I digress.

I run Royal Purple motor oil and gear oil in my vehicles and they all run smooth as glass on the stuff. I don't have any scientific data or UOAs or anything like that, but I certainly don't have anything negative to say about Royal Purple as my cars seem to run very well (smooth startups, quiet idle, etc.).

It helps that I can buy the stuff at distributor pricing, too. I'm not sure if I'd run the motor oil if I had to pay retail price for it. The gear oil, however, is worth every penny from what I can tell.

That's BULL.

Please, post some links to these so-called "worst UOAs" you claim Royal Purple puts out, and I'm sure I can find just as many *excellent* UOAs from Royal Purple.

I can show excellent and terrible UOAs from *ANY* oil - just name one. Most on here would agree that UOAs are mostly vehicle-specific and user-specific, and not very oil-specific.

Other then RP's raceing oils and their 15W40 I do not like their product. It is over priced for what you get. In most applications the old M1 beat it time and time again. I can not see paying the same or more then M1EP for a lesser product.Their oils shear to easy for a narrow range synthetic and their wear numbers are normal not as good as M1 in like applications.

It can not hurt to try it maybe your vechile will like it but I doubt it. I would stick with M1EP. If I did try RP I would definately do a UOA to compare to M1EP. I have a very low opion of RP's oils!

i am using RP 5w-20 in a 2.4 accord, the engine seems smoother to redline than on M1, but no numbers yet.

Will turn in a UOA this week, hopefully letting me better decide between M1 and RP. RP is close to M1 price here, ~$6/quart local.

I use RP 5w20 instead of M1 because of political reasons which are not for this board. I do like it. We need more UOAs on the 5w20 before anything is known for certain. I can't do it yet because my car doesn't even have 10k on it yet. Terry used to speak highly of the RP company but that was a few years ago. Things might have changed. Either way, I'm still going to use it and start getting UOAs around 20k.

I sometimes feel the same way, but maybe for different reasons. I'm all about supporting the "little guys" versus the big corporate monsters if/when I get a chance.

I doubt much has changed since Terry made those comments. Every time I go to the RP headquarters, it's always the same people there. Plus, they're always very cool to me and give me freebies when I show up - some Cabella's gun oil (made by RP), pneumatic tool oil, stickers, etc. You gotta love that.

The analyses I've seen of RP in GM engines show very low iron levels; certainly better than M1 for example. Their RP21 racing oil also has shown excellent numbers in Ed Hacketts Sube turbo.

At that price point, I think it's a very good synthetic....
