Hi Guys,

I been looking for BMW approved oils ... LL-01
But I don't think that there is anything super special about LL-01

Royal Purple vs Redline ...

What you guys think about new RP SN approved oil ?

Thx

NDX, why not GC or M10W40?

(BMW Approved)
Like the guy from ING says: "save your money"

GC and M1 costs here as much as RP and RL .. so I guess RP or RL will be a better choice ?

BTW, I'm from Ontario too...

As a Texan, I would love to support RP, but I have issues with a product that I can't get basic specs for online... unless I am missing it somewhere?

Good call. I like it when companies show the numbers. I'm not a sucker for clever marketing slogans....

My concern with Redline vs GC is the visocity at 100

RL - Vis @ 100°C, cSt 10.6
GC - Viscosity, cSt 100°C ASTM D-445 12.1

Should that be a concern for me ?

There have been numerous problems with aftermarket gear lubes in BMW transmissions. The OEM stuff smells awful and has an odd consistency.

What are you running this in? What makes you think either oil will be better than GC or Mobil 1 0w40 in this application? I mean Mobil 1 0w40 has a massive resume of OEM uses and is the lube of choice for many professional racing teams.

royalpurple.com/prod-pdfs/motor-oil-ps.pdf

There you go. And no, it isn't easy to find on their site. I don't know why.

Also, to the OP, the 0w-40 RP is still SM as before. That's the one that "meets or exceeds" A3/B3-04, for what it's worth.

Neat, thanks. I can't find a link to that anywhere on their site, but perhaps I am just not looking hard enough. Too bad it doesn't have HTHS, still better than nothing.

Finding HTHS isn't easy for many oils. Their oils that meet European specs (i.e. 0w-40 and 5w-40) might have a certain HTHS minimum to meet for the various ACEA specs. Beyond that, I have no idea.

As for the sheet, I couldn't find it on the site, either. Google took care of that for me. I think I stumbled across it once on my own, but don't ask me how I did it.

When comparing oils with different chemistries you must look past the KV100 spec's and focus on their HTHS viscosities.
Red Line 5w30 has a HTHS vis of 3.8cP vs 3.5cP for GC consiquently it will be heavier than GC at all oil temp's. I've run both these oils and can confirm that's the case based on oil pressure.

Red Line 5w30 is a good oil but has a relatively low VI of 162.
I'd prefer a 50/50 blend of Red Line 0w30 and 0W-40. This will give you a HTHS vis somewhat higher than GC but with a much higher VI, even higher than Mobil 1 0W-40.

The RP choice I assume you're thinking about is their 0W-40.

I did talk with RP Tech Support and they said that 5w30 would be the best but 5w40 and 0w40 will be as good ...

So I think I would go with 5w30 any opinions on that ?

Thank you

Overall, I really dont think RP and Redline are in the same ballpark. Redline seems to be a specilaized high quality product with real tech support you can call to discuss technical issues with.

Royal Purple seems to rely on hype and marketing.

The only actual negative information I have seen on Royal Purple is in the Amsoil gear oil review. The RP product was awful.

I don't think RP has made available PDS info on that oil yet.
