I might be reading this wrong, but several specs seem worse to me, like...

cSt @ 40°C 35.0 vs 32.5 while both keep cSt @ 100°C at 7.5
Viscosity Index 180 vs 210
Flash °F 440 vs 450
Fire °F 475 vs 490

Is there a way to tell the old stuff from the new? I've always been impressed with the Max ATF specs as they were pretty much some of the best specs around when comparing. Looks like the Pour is better on the new though.

Yes, it does look worse. And, with it costing $13 a quart at the local stores here, its now a bit overpriced for what you might or not might get.

I have to agree. Heck, the Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc synthetic has some pretty nice specs for about half the price of the boutiques. I think that's what I'm going to put in the wifes GMC Jimmy since the price is so good and it's specs are right there with the best of them.

I take that back. It looks like the Valvoline MaxLife ATF is a Dexron VI fluid. It stacks up well to those. Anyhow, I thought I'd get the specs of all the majors to compare for fun. Looks like the old Royal Purple Max ATF is pretty much the best on paper. Except for Pour Point, unless that PP above is in Celsius. It doesn't say in your post, but everything there is in Fahrenheit so I made the assumption is was too, but looking at all of its specs I'm now inclined to believe that is actually Celsius -60 which would make it better than the new stuff and only being equaled by Red Line's D4. Here's the list to compare (I wish I could find this old Royal Purple!!)...

Spec // Mobil 1 / MaxLife / D4 // Amsoil / New RP / Old RP
@40c // 36.3 //// 28.18 // 34 // 38.9 //// 35.0 /// 32.5 (lower better)
@100c / 7.4 ///// 6.11 /// 7.5 / 7.6 ///// 7.5 //// 7.5
VI ///// 176 ///// 173 //// 198 / 168 ///// 180 //// 210 (higher better)
PP c /// -51 ///// -51 //// -60 / -53 ///// -56 //// -60 (lower better)
FP c /// 220 ///// 202 //// 225 / 234 ///// 227 //// 232 (higher better)

...as you can see, I'm assuming the Old Royal Purple's Pour Point is in Celsius, but honestly it almost has to be simply to match it's other amazing specs. The MaxLife is really a Dexron VI fluid so it's almost unfair to put it here. I'm not sure why they did this as Valvoline actually has a full synthetic Dexron VI fluid so I'm not sure why they made the MaxLife to its spec too. Spec wise I'd rate them like this...

Old Royal Purple Max ATF
Red Line D4 ATF a very very close 2nd
New Royal Purple Max ATF
Mobil 1 ATF - AMSOIL ATF (tossup, maybe a very slight edge to M1)

Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc ATF (really should be compared to other Dexron VI fluids instead, which it stacks up well to)

I have a Royal Purple brochure and the specs in it are of the new Max ATF, but I got this quite a long time ago last year, so this new stuff has been out awhile. Does anyone know how to tell it apart from the old formula? I'd really love to stock up on the old stuff before it's gone forever. Otherwise I think the Red Line D4 is the next best (and super close to the old RP!) as its specs are better than the new formula of Royal Purple.

And yes I know, specs are just specs. I'm just having fun. All of these are fine ATF's and so any would do the job. But might as well go by something.
