This isnt a knock on redline or amsoil. I love redline and amsoil. They dont have gimmicky additives they use. They use quality additive packages and great baseoils to make very good oils.

As does RP but the whole purple oil bottle design and "syenerlec" is too gimmicky for me.

Sorry but no thanks.

Synerlec is a sulfurized ester. There are countless other oil companies using esters...such as Red Line. I think you need to do some reading on what Synerlec really is -- it is not a snake oil/[censored] additive.

Also, most oil companies (even XOM, Shell, etc) are buying from Lubrizol. We've talked about that here before, and there are a few Lubrizol employees who even post here.

Not too many rational folks hate the product, as it is a decent one for sure.

But when I can have Mobil 1 0W-40 for 5.99 it is an easy decision...

The PQIA analysis of RP 10w30 SL oil a couple of years ago shows the ZDDP level was not elevated - in fact it met the specs for SN. The reason it was rated SL was because of the sulfur content at 13,060 ppm, which is not allowed in SM and SN. The sulfur comes mainly from the Synerlec EP additive.

In addition to Clevy's points, there is also another marketing aspect. When the old style SL Royal Purple disappeared, a lot of people (even here) were annoyed. RP HPS was the designated replacement for those who wanted higher additive levels (including Synerlec). However, some people don't want a "performance oil" but want a "certified oil" even if those certifications are obsolete.

afoulk: I have seen cats plug up on rare occasions. These were early cats, and with engines burning phenomenal amounts of oil.

rw19: Before you talk about "snake oil" and "major oil company" you might want to take a look at RP's industrial catalog. They're the only company out there that even comes close to Mobil's product selection with respect to industrial lubes.

I preface with...**I am not an RP hater and have never used it**

I did a short search online for regular RP and the cheapest I found it with free shipping was Amazon for $37.79 (close to the same price as my local Walmart $37.97 + 8.25% tax = $41.10 for a 5 QT jug). Without free shipping at Autoplicity, it was $34.37 + $12.78 shipping = $47.15. Currently, every mainstream synthetic (except Quaker State Ultimate Durability and ST) at Walmart is $25.17 + 8.25% tax = $27.24 per 5 QT jug. So Walmart pricing for both in a 5 QT jug is $41.10 (RP) versus $27.24 (all others).

Based on these numbers I do not understand how RP is close to the other synthetics in cost or value (unless it just lasts that much longer or has some other properties to warrant the cost difference). No sarcasm intended, can you explain your thoughts?

I close with...**I am not an RP hater and have never used it**

1 - Not everyone buys their oil at WalMart which I pointed out. In those cases it is no more expensive than PP/PU/QS/VVL/M1. You can always find something cheaper than RP certainly. I also did say it could cost more but be close.

2 - With deals/sales it can be had for the same or even less than the Walmart 5 quart jugs at WalMart and I have done it many times. I have bought RP for that BITOG WalMart standard of $5 a qt and have done so within the last year and a half. PepBoys not too long back had a deal where you could get 5 qts of RP API + an RP filter for $35. Figure it anyway you want but with a $15 filter as part of the deal that puts the p/qt price in the $5 range just like 5qt jugs at WalMart. They have had other similar deals as have some other places I deal with.

You can get RP at Jegs with free shipping for $7 a qt. Ebay with free shipping $7 a qt. I just got a 6 pack of RP API 5W20 with free shipping off Amazon for $37.95 about 2 weeks ago. It is sitting here waiting to be used in my new Cherokee. That works out to $6.325 a qt.

There are places it can be had for cheap money if you have a good local source like I do as well. I have 2 speed shops where I can get it for less than I can buy PP/PU/QS/VVL/M1 etc.... by a long shot( especially if I get it by the case+ ). Walmart 5 quart jugs excluded but even then it is less than $2 a qt more.

As I said there is more to the oil buying world out there than the oil aisle at WalMart. It is not the only place oil can be bought nor is it the only place people actually buy oil. In those cases RP can actually be less than the name brand oils.

And if you're in Canada, wherever RP is on the shelf, you'll find it placed somewhere between the regular price of M1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance (or between Syntec and Edge, same difference). So, it's not bad at all.

Part of the reason boutiques are expensive is simply because of where they're sold. Pennzoil Conventional is a bargain when it's under $14 at Walmart. It's not when it's regularly priced at $25. RP looks good at $47 when Mobil 1 Extended Performance is over $50. Or, let's play the pick and choose game, which everyone likes to thrust upon RP.

The only place I can get PU here, NAPA, sells it for $74 a jug. Another place sells Motul at a similar price. So, yes, RP at an everyday price $47 is a value brand, no? After all, RP, PU, and Motul are similarly difficult to find here.
