Royal Purple API: Grp III or Grp IV?

That's my belief as well. But I couldn't find pseudo confirmation anywhere. 'Pseudo' because we never really know based on what the oil co. tell us.

Isn't synerlec a sulfur compound? (which is NOT in the ILSAC AOI starburst cert lubes) IIRC the performance oils show high sulfur - maybe Im incorrect .... IDK.

It's a sulfurized-ester.

Here is what RP tech support told me a while back:

The only RP SAE street oil that still contains Synerlec is the 5W-40 (part #01540, quart bottle). The update to API SN and ILSAC GF-5 required compliance with chemistry restrictions that precluded the use of Synerlec and required a reduction in anti-wear additive. We did introduce a new line of performance street oils, though. Royal Purple HPS oils are an improvement of the older street synthetic oils, all containing a generous dose of Synerlec and high levels of anti-wear additive. Unfortunately, they will likely need to be special ordered through a local Napa, O’Reilly or CarQuest, or you can get them online at Jegs.com, Lucky7Trucks.com, PacePerformance.com, and SummitRacing.com.

In reference to the above, even in the SL days (and SM for their Euro oils), I always wondered why the 5w-40 oil (with the Euro specs) had Synerlec, while the 0w-40 Euro oil did not.

I think the API stuff is group 3 however their higher shelf products have pao and ester in varying percentages.
The synerlec stuff is something special. Their API stuff is on par with all other API synthetics.

A year or so back, Meijer clearanced all of the old API SL stuff for as little as $3.42/qt.
By that time, there wasn't enough left for a couple of oil changes.
It would have been interesting to have run the "with Synerlec" API SL 10w30 for two or three changes in one of the cars and then UOAed it.
The price certainly would have been right, had I been there soon enough to grab 15 quarts or so at the killer price.

I can't find the 0w30 in jug size, or for the price Walmart sells it. I'm ok with it though, Valvoline will do just fine. Gone full circle...lol

Gotcha.

All royal purple products, the API certified, HPS and XPR line are mainly all group IV PAO synthetic with some group V esters. I emailed RP this exact question about a year ago and Chris Barker from tech service replied as such. Unfortunately due to the length of time I do not have that email but you can email them personally if you so wish.

Interesting... if true, this would explain the price premium.

The RP Synerlec oils are the best of the best imo (I have an impeccable uoa to back it up),but the api oils,I have no idea how they compare to other over the counter synths. I`ve wondered if they`re grp IV as well.

It did well in this oil test, FWIW
