Royal purple 5W30 oil usage...

Just came back from a 400+ mile trip to the UP of Michigan and I noticed I went thru about 10oz. of Royal Purple. Never had a usage issue before. Oil is in the crankcase of a 2000 Z71 Silverado w/5.3L Vortec. I've used only synthetic oils from the first change (Mobil 1, PP, Castrol) once a year About 7K average each OCI. Engine only has 43K on it. I know 10oz. is not alot but I've traveled 1200+ miles to Florida and didn't have a drop in my level. Do ya think the RP was gettin to the places the other oils didn't (ie past the rings) I don't think I have the piston knock that these engines are prone to But maybe I do. Any thoughts...

I used Royal Purple sometime back. The reason I quit using it was it thinned out. I though this problem had gone away but maybe it has not. I did used oil analysis and never had any consumption but it was thin after 7500 mile change intervals. My mobil 1 has never thinned out based on used oil analysis.

I've used RP 5W20 in a Dodge Hemi v8, and 5W30 in a Dodge 3.8L v6 and a Highlander 1MZ 3.0L v6. In the Hemi and Highlander, I've had only minimal (1/8 to 1/2) quart usage across 3k (hemi) to 6k (toyota) mi OCIs. M1 usage across the same vehicles is mixed. The Hemi uses none, the Dodge v6 burns 1 qt in 5k mi, and the Highlander 3/4 qt in 6k mi. To me it seems each oil in each specific application may be consumed more or less than other oils in the same applications. I've found no general trend across oils for more consumption vs. less. However, certain engines, seem to have a tendency to consume oil regardless of the brand. I'd say 10 oz. after 3k mi is pretty good results.

my car uses zero RP 5w20 over 5k intervals. If this was the first run of RP, you might give it at least 2 runs to see if it stops. RP's film does not seem to like other oils too much, IMO. The best results with RP seem to come after consecutive runs of RP.

I'll thank you all for your thoughts and I believe maybe the engine is finally broken in and RP is a slick synthetic oil. I bought the 5 gal. container so we'll see after the next oil change. Maybe a 10w30 weight would be more suitable.

My thought would be to go back to those non-consuming oils that you had so much success with. I would discontinue the Royal Purple.
