I've seen a PCMO SAE30 turn to burnt molasses, where the HDEO 15w40 looked exactly like it did when I installed it...same mowing conditions, same mower; completely obvious difference.

The SAE30 appeared "cooked" for lack of a better term...the second fill of HDEO looked fine. It was a very obvious difference...it didn't take a used oil analysis to tell me there was a problem.

deeter, why do you think that is? I would blame that kind of failure on the base oil ... unless you think the 15w40 protected better and the engine actually ran cooler?

When I think of HDEOs, I think of a better add-pack ... although I suppose they could use a higher grade base oil (Group II+ vs. Group II, etc ...) that would be less likely to oxidize and therefore would serve as a longer lasting lubricant.
