Will using rotella t6 cause catalytic converter problems in gasoline engines?

RT6 is mid saps , cat friendly . Its formulation that was used in the past was listed on their web sites in PDF form till Shell pulled it from all their web sites.( just recently )

Now they have replaced it with a generic "it is good for your vehicle type of oil fact sheet " now with no ingredients listed and amounts of same I'd stay away from it due to changes in the formulation that can occur without anyone knowing .

In a pinch I'd wager it was ok, but why wonder when many other oil companies list their ingredients for you .

I have not ran any T6 recently in a gasoline powered engine, however I have ran it a lot in the past with zero effect on the catalytic converter.. Many people confuse HDEO's with diesel oils they are HDEO's which are run in many different types of engines gasoline, diesel, not to mention stationary, marine etc etc,.. I would run it without worry.

Keep in mind that it really just has SL (pre 2004) levels of ZDDP. So obviously if you have a 5 year or older car, that's basically what it was running on for it's first year or two.

I really wouldn't worry. Over thousands of cars I'm sure there is a difference. At the unit level, the amount of oil you burn and "luck of the draw" are much bigger factors.

Unless your burning oil like crazy, dont worry about it. I know many people that have run rotella in gas vehicles for ever and have not had CAT problems. My truck is going on 220000 miles and probably 80 percent of its life has been on rotella or Pennzoil CI formula HDEOs. Maybe over 20 years and 400k miles or something then maybe it would be an issue but i have not personally witnessed any ill effects from using HDEO in gas engines. Actually i have only seen one CAT fail and it was on a caviler that ran regular PCMO.

It is API SM-rated for gasoline engines. That should answer your doubts right there.

Thanks for the replies... the main reason I asked was I sent an email to shell asking if there were any issues using this oil in gas engines. The reply was...


Rotella T6 5W-40 meets API CJ-4 and SM specifications, thus can be used in both Diesel and Gasoline engines. However, when used in a gasoline engine, it can potentially shorten the life of the catalytic converter. Burning oil is usually an indication...

I also asked what base oil it was...

Rotella T6 5W-40 is a group III synthetic base oil combined with excellent additive packages for improved fuel economy, wear performance, deposit control, heat resistance, and emission control.

Burning any oil can shorten cat life. On American cars it is no big deal unless you have to undergo emission tests in your area of operation

Remember you have a 150,000 or 5 year warranty on that cat

I used Rotella T 15w40 in my old 79 Z28 a few years ago, stock 350 engine with stock exhaust (cat equipped) and the only ill effect was that it made the exhaust smell really bad! The car had a bazillion miles on it and burned a bit of oil...so when I started putting Rotella in it, people and critters stayed away from it while the engine was running!
