I just ran Rotella 5w40 synthetic for about 4,800 miles on my 95 BMW 525i with 225,000 miles. Tore the filter apart and found a lot of small carbon like particles in the filter pleats. Much more than previous filter checks. I was surprised and impressed with the cleaning.

I thought the engine would be fairly clean after three Auto r-x treatments and Two Kreen engine cleanings over the past few years. Guess Rotella really cleans.

Well I do not know about a miracle, just surprising.

I may try Rotella T6 in my 1994 300+k miles LS400. The recommended grade is 5W30, so I need to thin it out a little with 0/5W20.

My 140+k miles 13 years old E430 may need some cleaning too, so I need to get 2 jugs for both cars.

We need pictures of the filter!

They have a 10w-30 conventional so as long as its not too cold you can try it or the semi-syn t-5 can be found in 30 and 40 grades. I think I've seen a 5w30 T-5 semi syn though.
And OP. 5000 miles is a bit short for a syn,you could go 7500 for sure with that oil.

I live in So Cal about 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean, so the weather is mild all year. We rarely see anything below 40-45F(4-5C) overnight and usually 60-75F(15-23C) during the day.

Honda recommends 5W40 for cold climates and 10W30 elsewhere (very unusual).

Hmm... that's odd indeed. Thicker oil in the colder climate? I can see the 5w vs the 10w, but you'd figure the 30 and 40 would be reversed as well.

You wont notice a difference between 0/20 and 5/40 HDEO

It is strange isn't it. Although its only thicker at operating temp. The 10w-30 would shear less and stay in grade longer.
I've used the t-6 5w-40 and its not as heavy duty as its conventional and semi-syn brethren. It's neutered for diesel exhaust systems. The t-5 and the regular conventional has stronger additive packages then the t-6.
OP. If I was in your shoes I would use conventional rotella 10w-30 year round at around 5000mile intervals and know for sure the engine is protected well beyond what abuse I can put it through.
And 5000miles is a minimum. I'd be looking for a nice day sometime after the 5000 miles ticks by to change it. Even if 6000 rolls around I'd still not worry. But I would be looking shortly for a day to get er done
