Been thinking of running Rotella T 5w/40 syn in my 2001 Ford V10. I currently use it in my 6.0 powerstroke and I want to use same oil for both. I've also been reading other forums where guy's have been running it without issues. Give me your feedback if you have some information on this. Thanks...... Oh yea, I live on the central coast of California so no wild temp issues.

Yup, I run TDT CI-4+ (D1) in my 5.4L Expedition. Its on its 2nd OCI with it. UOA is in the UOA's section, next one will have TBN on it.

Running Fleetguard Stratapore filters too.

Seems to be a very good combo.

I think the higher vis would be fine in your V-10 engine. You may suffer a slight loss of fuel economy, but overall the "protection" will be fine. Reducing oil storeage complexity is against BITOG nature, however!

VVT engines are likely much more sensitive to the vis requirements, when they use the oil pressure to modulate the VVT system, such as Ford's current 5.4L design.

I would use only 5-20 or 5-30 (MotorCraft, preferred) - whichever weight is spec'ed for your year.

Nothing against RTS 5-40, a magnificent product when used where it's supposed to be, just not the best for Ford Modulars. Guys at the Ford Truck forum have documented issues of Mod engine problems related to use of heavier than spec'ed oil.

YMMV, and, it's your $$$$, but I can tell you that every Modular we've ever had (15-20) has been run on 5-20 or 30 from Day 1, and we routinely get 200K or more out of 'em before the PA road salt eats the bodies away.

Our weather is similar to yours, colder winters about the only difference.

Ford spec's the GT500 and Ford GT (both Modular engines) for a 5w50! And Ford spec's a 10w30/5w30 for the VCT engines in Aus, 5w40/15w40/20w50 for the older ones (like this 2V).

I've been extremely happy the the results thus far with the 5w40 in my 5.4L. Including the complete elimination of consumption, even with being driven hard.

I stand corrected!!

... The key element being that Oz is blazing hot in many places. Again, I say, choose the viscosity according to ambient temps and operational conditions. Hot temps and hard use (high oil temps in both cases) dictates higher viscosity. If you don't have either in abundance, my recommendation would be a 10W or 5W-30.
