The company that is doing my roof put in thinner .019 step flashing in instead of the .032 that I was told I was getting. They say that they will rip out the .019 and put in the .032 if I want, but it may damage some other things along the way.

I don't know if it's worth it. Any opinions?

If you want .032 then have them do what was in the contract; if they screw it up during the process make them fix it or pay for someone else to do it properly. They got caught and are trying to weasel out of the contract IMO.

Yup, you paid for thicker, they have a contractual responsibility to use that, and to complete the.job properly. OR. If you are ok with the thinner material, get your cost reduced.

If the job is done and it is a clean job I suggest withholding an agreeable sum and calling it done.
Tearing it up opens up potential leaks.

My thoughts as well.

Wow...that's about half the thickness. Pictures? Is it exposed? Wrinkled or kinked? So they're putting 'the warning condition' back on you because they screwed up. I'd tell them to do it over and fix/replace anything they damage in doing so.

Stand Firm and Hold Fast.

This is one of but many reasons I do as much of my own repairs and maintainence as possible: Dealing with knucklehead contractors that play this game.

If it looks to be installed properly then I would get a price reduction and make sure the work is guaranteed. The step flashing does not wear through but could tear more easily if it was not installed properly.

Usually when something like this happens to you, you'd at least expect dinner and flowers and a cup of coffee as the after glow subsides into a blissful memory.

Don't accept that a hap hazard repair that will leave you with damage and the known potential for leaks in the future. Their own statement that their repair work will probably be as bad as their initial job is a big red flag.

Pay another company for an estimate to correct the problem so that it's done correctly without any disclaimers and carries a warranty. When someone messes with you then you should be prepared. After all you're not a roofer.

Then work out the fix.

At least you both now know that their work is substandard and that once they are paid you won't be seeing or hearing from them, again.

They say that they want to replace it now. It seems as if they will put in watershield, also, so it should be more robust than if I had had the .032 from the beginning.

Have them put some decorative copper over the stepped flashing as a first line of defense. I'd probably be less than their labor to tear it off.
