RockAuto Shipping

Other than Amazon & Ebay, where else do you guys buy parts? RA typically has the best price and selection for my orders in the past. Their shipping algorithms are awful though. Add one of these, and then add something else with the 'same warehouse' icon and the shipping location for both changes to different warehouses, or same warehouse but the shipping for both costs more than shipping individually. It doesn't happen all the time but it annoys me when it does.

I like their split credit card payment option though. Good for using up rebate cards.

I totally agree with you. Who would consider price without including shipping and tax???
That's just ignorance.

Recently on RockAuto, I put in 2 of the same part # in my shopping cart.
Apparently each were coming from different warehouses costing me double shipping. So I removed them from my cart.
They must have had only 1 remaining in one location and the rest in the other. So they wanted me to take the hit on shipping...NOT ME BUDDY!

Try it before you knock it.

RA suggests a "better" (USPS formatted) address for my wife's work at the 11th hour, that includes the zip + 4, and it's cheaper.

Good point. I recently purchase 3 cartridge type oil filters from RA (I found by playing with item count I could get up to 3 filters shipped for the same shipping cost, which made it a "deal"). The correct overall length should be 4.2" per the OE spec filter. Using a micrometer I found 2 of the filters were within spec but one was more than a tenth of an inch short. And, it didn't even appear to use the same filter media. The box for that one filter looked like it had been through the ringer and if I had to guess it was just a poor knock off type shoved into a name brand box. I sent RA my observations and they sent me out another filter that matched the other two (which again, were within OE spec)

-dealership
-pick n pull
-partsTrain.com (which is now carParts.com)

Pick n Pull can be great for cheap OE stuff, if they have your model year(s). It just depends on what I'm needing when it comes to Pick N Pull; some things I'd prefer new, other things I don't have a problem with being used.

With $14 shipping. No thanks I avoid rock auto.

That's funny you pointed out spark plugs.

Right now NGK Laser Iridium (7854) are $8.34ea on RA. You have to buy lots of 4. So for my 6cyl, Rocks system forces me to buy 2 lots of 4, for a order total of $74.61w/tax + shipping @$7.89...and, I have 2 left over plugs that I may never use because there's a good chance I may not even own the car the next time the plugs need changing.

Walmart by comparison, has the same NGK plugs for $52.86 out the door for a set of 6. I can buy exactly 6. And Walmart's return policy/process is super easy should I have a bad plug.

Now why would I get my plugs from RA???🤔

*Don't get me wrong, RA can be a good resource and value on some things but you really have to do your homework and not just assume you're getting the best price.

Think of RA as a realtor or commissioned salesperson.

That's what they are-- a facilitator.

It might not make sense for me to buy a brake rotor from Los Angeles. The shipping is cost-prohibitive.

So they let that sale slide.

Amazon or WM are worried about "building their brand" or "dominating the marketplace" and will eat the loss so I don't discover the competition.

They'd also buy stuff from the OE and ship it to an intermediate warehouse, an additional, expensive step.

There's no free lunch, and there's no free shipping. It pays to shop around.

BTW, Amazon isn't as awesome as they were even just a couple years back. eBay is consistently great!

All those $3.95 to $7.95 (and up) dollar by dollar fees aren't going to be adjusted.

Happens to me all the time. It comes up as one quote when I'm ready to check out and when they actually calculate the shipping, it works out to a slightly lower number. It's the same with other websites and shippers like Fedex, the quote to a business address is slightly cheaper than a residential address. I prefer the business address anyway for the same reason that they do, there's always someone at the business to take a package so probably less package theft and easier drop offs.

Shipping cost? Lol, even out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean the hundreds of parts I've ordered from Rock, shipping included, are always are cheaper than the same parts in the parts stores here.

Isn't it funny we can click around these days saving gas, time and wear and tear on our vehicles and avoid dealing with parts counter people and we still complain about getting ripped off.

In places outside the lower 48 states, Rockauto is much cheaper than buying locally, plus they ship worldwide.

Amazon.com is great if you have prime or eBay. Im Canada we get fleeced usually from amazon.ca and half the stuff on Amazon.com can't be shipped outside the US.

Consider yourself lucky to have the freedom to save money on shipping and having more choices available to you.

I like RA and still order from them. However like anything else, you need to shop around between online and local purchases.

I also like to experiment in my "checkout" to see where I can save on shipping which also coordinates with my bottom line. I may pay $2 more for a different brand of the same part but I may in turn save $10 on shipping co$t.

In addition, it's not only about the bottom line of CO$T but, I want the quality part too, not JUNK. There are brands that I WON'T buy due to poor reputation. So, I may $pend more money to get the better part.

Figured out , quite some time ago , that sometimes it is just as good to break up an order . Or add some other items used for general maintenance .

Do not really get all wound up about about it .

I think the main reason is, at least with FedEx, UPS, etc is because they're already likely to be in that area. I see the FedEx Ground and UPS drivers everyday, multiple times when I'm at work but at home UPS only comes around once per day. Some days FedEx Ground doesn't come down our street.

I've done hundreds of orders with Rock Auto for something like 18 years and had very few problems. As someone else mentioned, I've never imagined that Rock auto has any warehouse of their own. If they do it's very limited. They use a network of independent parts jobbers. I usually don't waste my time cross checking prices with Amazon unless it's a heavy item that Amazon's free shipping may result in a lower overall price. Amazon's application listings are also useless, you have to know what part no. you need. With RA, depending on the application, you usually get a good choice of brands and quality. The chain joints usually offer bottom of the barrel and maybe middle quality choices. Some years ago, RA started indicating which parts are shipping from the same location as something that you already have in your cart. Some of the jobbers offer Postal service shipping on small, lighter items. Maybe $2.99 for first class package service. The bulbs that a place like Auto Zone or Napa will want $6 a piece for may be $.39 at RA. The wholesale closeouts can be a steal.

RA gave me some grief on one return about 15 years ago. I didn't have cause to return anything else until abut a year ago. I did 3 separate returns with no fuss or drama. In 2 of the cases, they didn't even want the return back due to them eating the shipping. All of those damaged parts were from a Bronx jobber. I do miss the days when they didn't charge home state sales tax.

I like and order from RA. Lately however I'm thinking that I can buy from my local NAPA or Advance for about the same price (when shipping is factored in)and not have to worry that the RA package is going to get stolen from my front door deck.

Another point of agreement was that breaking up orders or otherwise side-stepping additional shipping costs kept RA as a viable option.

It illustrated to me once again how we're able to turn a blind eye to dishonesty or patronize liars and thieves if we can benefit from it.
Be honest, that's what it is.

The mind blower was the poster who said it was OK because RA "...was only trying to maximize its profits" or some such.
Must've been Mr. or Mrs. Rock.

I'll be the first to admit their shipping is getting expensive, but I've never experienced the magical changing of warehouses on the same part.

Just checked shipping on a couple light bulbs

  • Shipped to my home (in a smaller town, a little bit rural), the only "ground" option is USPS for $8.99
  • Shipped to my work address in a more central city, it switches to Fedex Ground for $6.99.
  • Shipped to a home address in this same city, it's still Fedex Ground, and the price increases to $7.99.

The shipping companies definitely know (look up) addresses to tag them as business or residential and while USPS doesn't charge differently, UPS and Fedex definitely do.
