Road trip question.

Hi everyone,just wanted to ask you all if i should change my oil before I leave on a 3,000 mile road trip? Car is a 2017 Escape with 18,000 miles. Current fill is motorcraft 5w20 and has about 5,000 miles on the oil in cold climate. What do you all think? Id love your opinions. Thank you all.

Motorcraft is not a durable oil and at 5k you are already at the limit.

With MC oil, yes I would change it. I use M1 and have gone on long trips with 8K on the oil with no hesitation. In two weeks I will be driving to Florida with the 2017 Fusion and will have 6K when I leave.

A few points to consider:

1. Last time I checked Motorcraft oil was a synthetic blend. Save for some special operating or design condition, 8K miles on any oil is not a big deal much less so for a blend. The iOLM would not consider it a big deal either--my 2014 Explorer typically goes 10K miles in mixed driving before it alerts me.
2. Highway miles are very easy on the oil and the engine. Prior to the iOLM, Ford typically stated 7,500 miles as "standard duty" and highway miles usually fall into that category.
3. If I looked it up correctly, your engine uses a Motorcraft FL-910s and to my knowledge, none of those have had tearing issues--that honor more often than not resides with the MC FL-820s.
4. Countless used oil analysis posted on this board that show "plenty of life" remaining in virtually every oil change--no matter what brand of oil or vehicle.

With that said--what should you do? I say, do whatever gives you comfort--it is your vehicle and your money.

Change it. If your posting on here for opinions, it's obviously on your mind. Just change it and you won't be worrying later if you should have.

If it's due for its oil change before you return then change it. If not, stick to your OCI.

Which engine?...If your Escspe has the NA 2.5 (like mine)...I'd wait (because it's got a 5.7 qt. sump and is easy on it's oil)....If it's the 1.5T I might change it (I think it has a smaller sump)..

On my 2011 Fiesta they recommend MC syn blend 5w20 and change at 10k.

Thanks for all the advice. It is a 1.5 EcoBoost. 5,000 on my oil and OLM Says 51%? Although it always goes 10% for every 1,000 miles driven no matter whats in the sump? It is bothering me so... Ill change it i think.

Just change it, Id spend the $30 to not have something on my mind the whole time, and you know its not pushing or stressing the oils limits.

It's my opinion that 5000 miles is a great choice for an oil change interval.

When you change it, take a sample for UOA then you will know for certain next time.

Change it, or possibly face your first venture into consumption with this relatively still new vehicle. Long road trips at/above 75-80MPH , up & down steep hills, will do that.

If you are already consuming a little, get off the Motorcraft and try Quaker State, Mobil 1, Valvoline, Castrol or Pennzoil. Move up to 5w30.

Have a nice, safe trip and change that oil before the trip.

Change it, i always put fresh oil and filter in my cars prior to a long road trip, get that warm fuzzy knowing have fresh additives and oil for the high speed drive.

If there's doubt, there's no doubt. That's a good concept for a lot of judgment calls, particularly those that can bring with them real, dire consequences, if mishandled. If I had any doubt about whether I ought to change my oil before a trip, I declare "no doubt" and change it.
