Chris, great pics. I should post some of my own. I was in Vegas last year and had to go to Long Beach, so I decided to take the Historic 66 route. I took US 91 south to 66, then went west. Not a lot on that stretch for the most part, but the old stuff that was there was great!

I did that trip in 06 from NJ to Phoenix. Going there I took 78 into 81 into 40. On the return trip, I took 44, I believe into 70. Had a lot of fun.

Even the most inept driver should be able to get the car moving and into highway gear without any long term detriment to the car. I drove down to Florida with a friend, who now has an automatic but had a manual for many years, in my Jeep last month. Well, the Jeep needs a bit of manhandling and careful clutching to get a smooth ride, and he was jerking the [censored] out of it. But, who cares, it was all highway. He got it into 5th and stayed there for 300 miles. I handled all the driving off-highway.

Also, I've driven coast-to-coast at least three times in my life. And coast-to-midwest countless others. Driving on the side roads is fun and there is a lot to see, but once you get west of Texas, you're going to want to spend some time on the interstate unless you've got a lot of time on your hands. It's certainly worth getting off and seeing the small towns and other southwestern attractions. I'm particularly fond of Meteor Crater, off of I-40.

Most of Route 66 is more depressing than it is anything. I lived right by and drove on old OK-66 for 2 1/2 years. I guess it's worth doing at least once, though.

Yes, the highway is the place where clutch is used least.
