RO polisher use groundrules

I'd like to hear from pros or semi-pros who regularly use a random orbital or rotary machine. I have s PC, have used it quite a bit with good results. However, the size and control of the pad and machine makes me hesitant to go near plasymtics and trim for fear of staining. This causes me to need a manual pad anyway, and while I finish flat surfaces a bit faster, it is extra trips around the car and extra pads to clean.

I guess some pros tape everything first? If going multiple coats this surely helps getting over dome parts quick, but is smother form of legwork...

What groundrules do you use for running a polisher of some sort in areas where there is lots of trim and plastic?

I detail semi-pro as I've detailed the bosses range rover, and jaguar. I also detaild a friends neighbors cadillac. I've found that using edge tape that leaves no residue works well. I've detailed my own car without taping up the trim and I didnt stain the trim. I use Meguires pro detailing stuff (in the tan bottles). I taped up the trim in customer cars as the trim on a 80,000 range rover is expensive and wanted to be safer than sorry.
