The vehicle is a 2004 Ford F150-5.4L 3v engine used as a daily driver for 10K miles/year. I am currently using 5 qts MC 5W20 and 2qts Red Line 5W30, 5w20 not available. After reading UOA's about Red Line being "aggessive" re bearing wear I am concerned that my mixture is not such a good idea. Am I heading for problems with this mix? Thank you for your advice.

How many miles do you have on this vehicle? How far do you plan to go on this interval?

I do not think that the MC/RL mixture will hurt anything. I am currently using the MC 5w-20 with the Schaeffer's Moly EP #132 and Lube Control (Molakule brew) in a Honda Odyssey.

Haley10 is correct about doing a UOA (used analysis) with Terry Dyson. The Blackstone TBN (total baseline #) with the Dyson commentary is the best deal going for $35. With this advice, you can fine tune the best combo for your truck.

The truck 7000 miles on it and my intention is to run 5K miles OCI. I will change at 10K miles and do a UOA at that time. The oil will only have about 3.5 miles use on it by then so maybe I should wait until 15K to run the UOA?
I am not "married" to the idea of 5K OCI, once every 2500 mile would be fine with me since I intend to have the dealership change it every 5K for warranty purposes anyway. Straight 5W20 makes me a little uneasy, particularly in the summer when 100 to 110 degree days are common. I add RL as insurance but I am not locked into RL, if something else will work I will be glad to give it a try. I have thought about adding a quart of Mobil 15W50 to 6 Quarts of MC5W20 at the next change. I do "over maintain" my vehiles, keep them 8-10 years, and have very few problems along the way. Thank you for your advice.

OOOPS..how about 3.5K miles instead of 3.5 miles.
There is a limit to "over maintenance"!

dbf,

I understand your worry about 5w-20. The MC 5w-20 (Conoco Hydroclear) is a top notch product. Do a search in Additives for "Molabrew" or "Schaeffer #132" and lubecontrol as well as "MC 5w-20" in the Used Oil Analysis Section; it has been a stellar performer. The #132 Moly will thicken up the MC to a 30 weight, however the MC 5w-20 is very close to a 30 weight oil anyway. The MC (ConocoPhillips) 5w30 is a semi-synthetic like the 5w-20 and could be used as a substitute if it makes you feel better.

The Redline 5w-20 by itself is similar in strength to many 10w30s, a good choice after the warranty period or the last option is Schaeffer's Blend 5w30 which is a Group II+, III with a superior additive package.

There are so many options available.

You will get varying opinions, I'm sure. One way to know for sure is to do a uoa and get Terry to interpret the results and consult with him on the matter. Otherwise, it's just opinion.

Personally, I don't mix motor oils. I might use additives that have Molakule's or Terry's approval for the application.

Without the uoa's, your brew is going to remain an unknown.
