RIP. Great actor.

Heroin OD, very sad. I often wonder what goes through the head of a person who is so successful, has more money than he can ever responsibly spend, and has the world by the balls. Then he goes and shoots up with that [censored]. I guess my age is starting to show. RIP Seymour Hoffman.

Drug users are usually troubled individuals. Troubled individuals are most frequently the best actors, (writers, painters, sculptors...)...artists.

We are an interesting species.

I dont understand it either - can't hold a lot of respect when something like that is done, and is their end.

Sad but really just stupid more than anything else.

No one wants to be addicted and ruin their lives. They think they are immune from this disease of addiction....until it is too late.

Then it's usually only a miracle if you get sober....once you cross that line.

Believe me. I am a recovering addict and alcoholic. I work with these people every day. Those that get and stay clean, are miracles.

Ironically (or maybe because he KNEW the part so well), he played an 'executive type' junkie (in the smaller, indie movie "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead" with Marisa Tomei) who goes to an upscale, wealthy persons 'smack boutique' and has the owner (a very effeminate Asian man) tie him off and shoot him up, and then he can go into another room and zone out on the bed.

Yes, despite your foibles/fatal faults PSH, RIP.

That needle spares no one. I've seen a lot in my time in narcotics investigations. It's the hardest addiction to kick.
I've seen crack users stop cold turkey, but the heroin never lets go. People use Seboxin and Methadone for years after they kick heroin.

Still remember him in "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead". Great movie.

As soon as I saw the headline "Found Dead in Apt", you know immediately what happened.

He never looked like a healthy person in interviews I'd seen. Whatever happened to the simple days when actors/actresses died of "ordinary" things like alcoholism?

Well said.
Also this person had ALL the advantages in life and threw it all away.

I always say NOBODY forces anyone to use that first hit of anything.

The only ones I have real sympathy for are babies who are born addicted. That is a different case entirely, since they could not help the situation foisted upon them.

Honestly though I really wish that these drugs were made legal and then provided at designated areas where the users can be warehoused and if they wish to OD so be it. The rest of us don't have to be devastated by their usually reckless actions on a daily basis. I feel the same about alcoholics.

Staying clean from drugs and alcohol allows freedom to experience life unfettered, unaltered. Yes reality brings pain, pleasure, sadness, happiness and all the other combinations, but it is what true living is.

Unfortunately fame = money = messed up thinking. Most famous people are totally messed up mentally and they deal with it by trying to escape reality. Most actors spend so much time playing other people, they don't even know who they really are so that messes them up even more. We will continue to read about these types that seemingly have the world as their oyster, yet inside they are a disaster, killing themselves every week or month. Each time it happens I have less of a reaction as it seems to be par for the course for these types.

I liked his acting, he threw it all away for a cheap false thrill the first time he dabbled. Sad he made that choice.
