I'm such a nerd that I do know the answer. They didn't offer Alley enough money for Star Trek III The Search for Spock. They did want Alley back for Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. The problem was Saavik's character turned out to be a traitor in the script and there was concern over the fans not liking that plot twist. So they renamed the Vulcan character Valeris and cast Kim Cattrall as the sexy traitor. Interestingly, Kim Cattrall had auditioned for the part of Saavik in Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan but Kirstie Alley got the part.

Very sad; as someone else said so many of the stars I grew up with are leaving in droves.

My favorite with her is with Tim Allen in "For Richer or Poorer".
