Volvo accused of "money-making" scheme.

So, one person in England leased a used car, it is out of warranty, and needed a repair. And she is upset about paying it. And Volvo bought the car back.

And, somehow, that is news?
Your over-simplified version of events is leaving out important information.

The issue is that it appears to be a common problem (at least 1/7 affected).
Volvo seems to have full knowledge of the issue, yet they appear to flaking out of responsibility by claiming the owners are to blame, and sticking the owners with the repair bill. Over on the Volvo forums, this is hardly an isolated incident.

Regardless, it's quite a hassle for anyone to endure, especially on a vehicle that's under warranty.

I read the whole article. It’s about one person, then the author goes on to make a bunch of unsubstantiated claims. So, not really oversimplified.

It is the story of one person who leased a used car in the United Kingdom and had an expensive repair out of warranty.

Nothing more.

I read the entire 'story' as well. @Astro14 summed it up perfectly.

The bottom line is cars can fail. If it's out of warranty, it could be expensive to fix.

For some reason Volvo chose to do more for this 'customer' than they had to.

I remember mentioning this forum that Volvo are amateurs with hybrid drivelines . Some member got really bent of shape on that.

Unfortunate events for Volvo owner but looks like they came thru.

I have NO knowledge of actual failure rates but if the electric rear axle drives (ERAD) are failing at any kind of appreciable rate, there's little excuse for that. I service a '13 Highlander Hybrid with 180k and it uses the same basic setup and the rear drive has given him zero problems.

Point being, we have the technology. And again, maybe the Volvo units are great and failures are actually on par with Toyota failure rates. I don't know. And I don't particularly like Toyota on a personal level but as a member of Team Reality I gotta acknowledge they mostly build good stuff (recent debacles excepted)
