Get about 30 mpg on our 2003 civic with a 50/50 rural/town driving mix.

46 mpg? Not going to happen with ours, ever, even 100% freeway.

87 Volvo 740 Turbo 20 city, 29-30 highway. 2.3 liter 4 cylinder manual 5 sp with a Cd of a brick at .39 and 3100 lbs.
97 Volvo 960 17-18 city, 28 highway 2.9 liter 6 cylinder 24 valve automatic a Cd of .36 and 3600 plus lbs.
Highway mileage is at a steady 65 mph.

My driving is a mix of city/hwy.

'96 Century: 25 mpg.

'93 Crown Vic: 20 mpg.

'73 Cadillac: 7 mpg

'68 Dodge Superbee: 5 mpg

'73 Cougar: 16 mpg

'82 Granada: 15 mpg

92 sentra 1.6 lt manual, 32 almost all city driving(one way 3 miles, 4 times a day); I have seen 41 when going to Miami from Atlanta, with cruise control on at 65 mph.

Yup. Search for fuel economy results on a forum with a lot of "ricers", and you'll find that. There are people who consistently get 20mpg with a Mazda3.

Over the last 6200 miles, my 2004 Mazda3 GT 5spd has averaged 32usmpg with about 70% highway driving.

95 Saturn SL1 automatic SOHC, rated 37hwy, I get 38 driving with a feather-foot. The computer shifting logic is tolerable and one can lockup the TC in 3rd or 4th going as slow as 30 mph.

Saturns' 95 SW1, 96 SL, 2000 SL1 all five speed SOHCs, all get/got 40-42 highway for me.

Kreigle, what I referred to as a rarity was all three together: Escort wagon + stickshift + cruise control.

At 286,000+ miles, I still get 35 mpg with this car on 55-60 mph highway travel.

Thanks. I'm not familiar with Escorts and their options, the only Ford I ever owned was a 1985 Tempo, and it was one of the worst cars I ever had.

1999 Civic (D16Y8 SOHC VTEC): Avg 33mpg 75% Hwy (70-80mph)

My record is 42mpg not-so-fun grandpa mode. But I prefer alot of WOT to 7,200rpm cut-off, just for fun

1996 Corvette LT4. Gets a pretty reliable 27 mpg on a long highway run at around 70 mph.

I don't drive enough in city traffic to have a solid number, but wouldn't argue with EPA's 16 for city.

EPA numbers were 16/27

Some friends with C6 Corvettes I take trips with use a bit less gas than my LT4 on highway trips. Quite a bit less on slow twisty road trips. It looks like they have really improved light throttle efficiency on the newer ones.

No one believes we are driving economy cars

My 2003 Mazda Protege'5 with the 5-speed has cruise control standard. Don't know if it always saves as much as some folks think. With a small 4-cylinder it is always a step behind on the Ozark hills, and tends to get into the throttle hard to maintain speed. I haven't checked overall mileage in the last year or so, but the first 14 k got me 31+, running about 70% Highway.

98 Corvette, auto trans, optional 3.15 axle ratio (base one is 2.73)

In my daily commute: 20-21 MPG

At a steady 70mph: 30 MPG

At a steady 60mph: 31.5 MPG

out of curiosity I tried 50mph and got 38 MPG!

2004 VW TDI with 33,000 miles on it

80 mph driving 49 mpg (using 5w-30 Elf Oil)O
Mixed City Driving 50/50 45 mpg
Mostly City Driving 40 mpg

Subtract about 1.5 mpg if you plan on using the 5w-40 oil it calls for.

****, my camaro gets 31mpg highway

I only get about 16-18 around town though when 100% city... mix is in the mid 20s and I run on 87.

For an econo car, I recommend a neon SXT or Civic. The VW TDI is awesome too if you like a diesel. (50mpg). If you need the ultimate in fuel economy, Id try a civic hybrid! (50/50)
