We have to admit that over the years folmulations keep changing from PAO to group III or better to group III + PAO blends especially in Europe and no company that followed the new path made any announcements about it.
It's just that nobody expected it from mobil , the PAO crusader.

Except, may be, TotalElf which has started to write "synthetic technology" instead of "fully synthetic".

I think that the person who reported this originally said that it only contain some Group III. It also contained PAO and other Group IV and V base oils. Seems everyone is in a panic over almost nothing. The proof will be in the UOA's compared to AMSOIL,REDLINE, and GC.

Just to put things in perspective, the member that tested and found minimal PAO tested 15w-50. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the formulations that have a wider range ie 0w-40 would rely on a good PAO base instead of the add pack. If he had tested such a formulation, perhaps the result would have been different. That's my 2 cents.

Everyone is so bogged down on the Groups present, and i understand that we all were misled and the price is outrageous for a group III, but the big picture has to do with how the oil functions in your vehicle. I own a toyota product and it seems to love mobil 1 and the UOA's are great. Even with all the hoopla, in the end use the oil that works for you! I know i am definately going to try Pennzoil Platinum and if the UOA's look good then i will kick M1 aside. Like all of you, i too feel deceived but dont forget the bigger picture.

I got the same reply tonight as well. I will reply back and see if it will do any good. HaHa I know it won't but I still have to try. Kind of feels good to just bug them. Maybe they will see how many of us are looking into this and they will change their ways. HaHa

With the onset of FAR MaxLife Synth, and the QS Torque-whatever rebates, earlier this year I've stopped using M1 in either vehicle.

I hope to keep hopscotching to cheap syn via rebates and sales for each OC. Using M1 oil filters (9.99 at AA, 10.99 at AZ).

If I need to I'll add some pink to Wally-world syn and use that if I can't get enough rebated syn.

I believe XOM thinks it has a captive audience for their oils, and they price accordingly.

Grp III's are too close in performance to GIV to make any realworld difference in my mind that I'd pay up for M1 any longer.

Interesting. I noticed the same thing with Motomaster Formula oil, Canadiat Tire Brand, made by Shell. Their top offer used to be "100% Synthetic", now it is "Synthetic Technology".
They also carry mineral and synthetic blend oils of this brand.

And the bigger issue is that Mobil 1 has not outperformed other "Fake Synthetics". So now we can pay a higher price for a more expensive "Fake Synthetic (Mobil 1)-and still get no better performance.

My mind is made up. I will no longer purchase Mobil 1 -period.

I agree with you Al. No more Mobil 1 for me. I just bought 46 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum on sale at Advance Auto @ $2.89 per quart. That will keep me in oil changes for 2.5 years.
GOOD BYE MOBIL 1.

What's funny is people were fine recommending group III as long as you don't use it for long drains. What's this going to say for folks trying to do the long drain??? Maybe they'll become less shy about using Platinum or other oils for long drains OR maybe they just won't use EP for long drains.....

Mobil1 has out Syntec'd Syntec......

I for one am not going to worry about formulations anymore, but.....I sure won't be using M1 out of principle...... I think I'm gonna be a Maxlife Synth/Rotella T Synth guy......

When my current stash runs out in 3-5 years, of course.

The following question might seem stupid, but please understand, I am not trolling... i am just a newbie.

I change my oil & filter every 3k. Since my car specs 5w-30, is it still a good deal to spend 20 bucks on the Walmart 5 quart jug of regular Mobil 1 5W30? That's all it costs. I understand IF you have to pay $6+ dollars per quart for Mobil 1, that you might choose to look for an alternative oil... but is it still a good choice in terms of quality at $4.xx per quart?

thank you.

Sure it's a great oil. But the frustration is the same with it as with Syntec. Why pay high prices for group III? Especially when the XHVI group III oils from SOPUS (Rotella T Synth, Pennzoil Platinum) are cheaper.

Hence the stupid ads with a bottle of M1 EP next to a Calloway Big Bertha?

In the grand scheme of things.: Compared to the cost of gas-the difference in cost of oil between $2 and $5 is almost nothing over an oil change interval. We here are babbling mainly over the issue of principles. Some of feel that we have been betrayed by Mobil and/or we just don't feel like overpaying for a group III oil.

The answer to your question is that Mobil 1 is a great oil and will do a great job for you. You are probably overpaying a small amount but if you are happy..enjoy.

Imho it's not a good deal if you're changing it every 3K. Might as well use something lots cheaper. For all we know regular M1 is unchanged. I'll bet there is more than one member here that'd take your dumped 3K mile regular M1 and use it. I know I would.

Usually people from a Customer Service are not fully aware of all details of product changes.

No joke there! I called them with some questions about their 5w-30 Truck & SUV and the Extended Performance filter.
