Replacing the van

The 2005 Grand Caravan (3.8 v6) has 178k miles. Decided that it was time for something newer for a family car. I sold my 2006 Colorado. The Grand Carvan was purchased new. It will become my "truck". I will place a large cardboard box or liner in the back with the Stow N Go seating laid down. I was averaging about 8k miles per year on the Colorado. Just changed the oil on the Grand Caravan using 5w30 G-Oil. The GC will probably see once per year OCI's from here on out using what ever synthetic is on sale or the cheapest (perhaps SuperTech).


The "new" vehicle is a 2009 Grand Caravan (3.8 V6) with 64k miles. I am assuming that it has an oil life monitor. The OLM will be used as a guide to oil changes using Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum and Napa Gold filter.

Back in the late 90's I used a Ford Aerostar as my work van, (which replaced an older Chevy Truck). I fell in love with that old van as it was easy to tote tools and regardless of weather, all stayed nice and dry. I removed all the passenger seats and had plenty of room for stuff.

A lot of my contractors use vans over pickup trucks because they are more secure and keep their tools dry!

Nothing like a snow filled bed of tools in the winter to make you want a work van!

My work van is a Transit Connect. I'm pretty sure the Caravan has a larger cargo space.

Minivan's are almost universally used like a truck multiple time's in there lives
I brought Home a swing set like this one, In pieces from Costco, In 2 trips with the VillaQuest

some of thise minivans can hold more cargo than a truck with a cap.

back when dad was working, he was a district manager for Big Lots, had 15-20 stores under him. for many of those years the company vehicle he had was a Ford minivan (6 Aerostars, and 3 Windstars) which got used to transfer product from one store to another. (usually packed Full. Floor to ceiling, back hatch to back of drivers seat) I remember riding with him on one transfer, when his van was in the shop, and he used his personal Chevy 1500(with cap).

the trucks' bed wouldn't fit as many weedwackers as the van did.(he just done a similar transfer in the van, and it held like 10 more than the truck did.)

After raising the family in Mopar minivans for 25 years, we needed a new vehicle for the wife and she insisted on sticking with a minivan despite the fact the our kids are grown and gone.

Bought a Toyota Sienna XLE and absolutely love it. Would not consider Honda due to VCM. Test drove the new Chrysler vs Toyota and, well, our conclusions are obvious. Very, very happy with the Indiana made van. Also took a very cool tour of the plant the same week they made ours. Very cool experience.

I read on here a while back that Mobil 1 oil doesn't meet the spec of the Chrysler 3.8 V6. Maybe try Pennzoil. I remember this specifically because our Rubicon has the same engine.. With Mobil 1 oil. It has a lifetime power train warranty so running the correct stuff is a must.
