Thinking about replacing the tires on my wife’s truck, currently cooper ATP 2 with about 4-5 32nds. We’ve been prwttt happy with these and plan to replace with the same…. I’m not sure if I want to put her through a wi get with marginal tread.

The Michelin LTX M/S2, on my F-150, are at 6/32. They are a little over 5 years old and at 55,000 miles. They are getting to the point where I don't trust them in rainy conditions. I plan on replacing them at 60,000 miles, regardless of the tread depth.

Replace your tires and sell your old tires on marketplace. Any money for your old tires is better than letting the shop keep them just to throw them away.
There used to be a gas station/repair shop that had a few used tires for emergencies. I always change tires by 4/32nd, and often sooner. I would take the old tires and give them to the shop. They'd put them with their other used tires to have when someone needed a tire just to get by for a bit.

When the old man who owned the place died, the family sold the lot. It was on a busy corner along the interstate. There's now a McDonalds on the property. I've not really looked for a replacement place to donate the tires.

Not worth taking a chance. Tire gives you a wear line in the thread. Chuck em just before you get to that point. Or 5 yrs, whichever comes first. Better safe than sorry. Don't play chicken with tires. Peace of mind.

I used to sell my used, but decent tires to a guy that flipped cars as long as he could use that size. But I haven’t seen him in a while. I have two 225-60-18 on Marketplace now with ~ 5/32nds.

I did the exact same thing for years.

Michigan winters can be brutal, the better option is to get winter tires and then continue to run the existing tires next spring
OP might need a second set of rims, many tire stores will refuse to remount something that low on tread.

Not in The Bronx. Those ghetto tire shops will mount bologna skins just to make a few bucks.....You guys need to find some ghetto shops. I have hundreds of them just 20-25 miles away from me. Open 7 days a week . Some even 24 hours !!!!! No appointment needed. Just CASH ! LOL :)....The last time I was in da hood, I saw a guy mounting tires/ fixing flats out of an old converted ice cream truck !!!

Not sure why, but as the tread declines it seems to me tires become substantially more vulnerable to nails and other puncture catalysts before they reach the tread limit. Maybe just a coincidence, but as they get closer to the end of their life I will pick up something that invariably causes me to replace them. Particularly annoying when there is still life on some but because of uneven wear between the four tires (yes I rotate) with all wheel drive (4Matic) I'm required to replace all four. Not practical to selectively replace, but sometimes there are discount deals on the purchase of a set of four. Some solace.

If you were approaching summer (or whenever your dry season is), then I might let them go until just before rain/snow seasons. But since you are already approaching winter, now is a good time to replace them.

4/32 = ~3mm.

Based on this chart, I'd say you did it at just the right time.

Big fan of winter tires and before kids I'd load my sports car up just like that... But now I prefer to run a 3PMS rated AT tire on my trucks full time.
