While I'm waiting for my Concealed Pistol License to come in the mail I've decided to try out some guns for just such a purpose.

My first and only handgun as of right now is a springfield GI 1911 full size, I have no qualms with this gun other than its size and heft. Not a very ideal CC weapon.

I went to the range looking to rent a kahr cw9, I had my heart set on it due to the excellent reviews and the way it felt in my hand, it seemed like the gun I was SUPPOSED to carry EVERY day. I show up and guess what, the lady that answered my phone call had mistaken the kahr cw9 I had asked about for a higher end kahr-way out of my price range to purchase.

So I get to looking for other guns I've considered for CC, and see that they have a Ruger Sr9c in the rental case, I figured what the hey I'll give it a whirl, worst case scenario I'm out ten bucks for the rental.

Took it out to the range (brought my .45 also) fired 50 rds, it functioned flawlessly. I am more accurate with it than I am with my .45(and I've shot the .45 quit a bit). The ruger had a great trigger, great sites, and it fits my hand excellently. I was so impressed I nearly purchased one right then, though I figured that wouldn't be prudent and I should at the very least read a few reviews on it.

Well upon reading those reviews I see that the sr9c has been known for what some like to call "teething problems", since it has been recently introduced some feel like ruger hasn't quite worked all the bugs out, and that one should wait a full year or so to ensure these problems are taken care of.

Some of the "teething problems" mentioned are light primer strikes and peening on the barrel. Now it seems as if the light strikes can be solved by cleaning out the striker housing and lubing with oil. The barrel peening is the thing that really bothers me, although it may only be cosmetic, I feel it is something that should not happen on any gun no matter how cheap it is. It seems to show lack of engineering on rugers part, who knows what other engineering problems may turn up as time passes.

I should mention that my rental exhibited none of these problems.

If any of you gents own a SR9C feel free to tell your tale.

I carry a Kel-Tec PF-9. Lightest 9MM that I know of.

When I bought it, paid under $300.00.

Bought a Unkle Mike's #4 pocket holster.

Ran about 100 rounds through it. No issues.

See the following web site.

I rented one also, although it was an early production model, and it did have some quirki-ness.The one thing that really bothered me was the mag release...In all the Ruger semi-autos' I've owned (P-87,89,97,Ive never experienced such a hard to actuate mag release such as on the sr9,I almost had to double-thumb it,were as on my 89 and 97 I wouldnt even need to change my grip for a combat drop and reload, plus there were some mag insertion issues on this weapon as well .I sure hope Ruger ironed out these bugs,it could be a great pistol.

Mag release/insertion problems were a non-issue with my rental, perhaps the one I rented is of a later build date.

I shot an early SR9....terrible trigger on it.

If I want a small carry pistol I will buy one of those new Walther PPS, or if I need hi capacity its going to be a Beretta PX4 or a FN.

Fortunately the sr9C has a completely upgraded trigger system.

Yeah I saw they were redesigned, but im not much of a Ruger autoloader fan in general. I have a P85MkII and its reliable as heck but man the ergonomics are poor.

Now my old Security Six wheelgun is a great weapon all around.

Glock or Springfield Armory XD compact 9/40/45 seem to work well and are reliable and can be bought on sale . You don't want to buy an expensive CC gun . A $4,000 Wilson won't do any better than a Glock or a Springfield Armory XD for the use intended. Not as fancy are the S@W J frame pistols not too pricy, light and easy to carry.

Over at our sister site read this...

And a post about the SR9C I posted here.

Love mine! I've got a "few"

9mm pistols and both of the SR9C are one of the best. Got quite a few thousand rounds down the pipe with no problems. Excellent trigger, very accurate and love the 10round/17 rounds setup from the factory.

I've recommended it since I got mine. For the $$ its a excellent value.

Bill

PS: My dad has the "lower" cost Kahr and its a nice weapon. MUCH better than his Kel-Tec

Thanks for the input guys! I think I'm pretty well settled on the SR9c for a variety of reasons, one of those reasons being the your input.

It may seem strange but I felt like a more competent shooter with a rented gun(sr9c) than my own. If my .45 didn't have sentimental value(first handgun) I would sell it in a heartbeat to pick up one of these 9c's.
