Gun cleaning day

I found Rem Oil useful once. Used several drops of it on my trusty Colt Detectives Special Second issue I kept in our beach house...

Going off on a tangent, but my shooting buddy/instructor showed up on a range day with a 38 Special Colt DS and tried to make this .45 ACP lover shoot it using the reasoning it's a backup piece. After not a small amount of grumbling, I gave it a try. That darned gun felt like an an extention of my arm. The bullets went exactly where I willed them.
It shot so well I came to the conclusion I needed one. Took me about 12 years (I'm guessing the timeline) to find one in very good condition. Darned things had become collector's pieces.

yeah ammo in a mag next to gun is ?? when I clean them I like to function check and test trigger if I had stoned it (1911)
No ammo around to easy to have a brain fart and shove a mag in and drop hammer that why its called accident.
Though learn to NEVER point at anything you do not want to shoot at. Unfortunately the more you shoot or do about anything
enough you lose the "fear" or get complacent stuff can go bad .

That said when reloading ammo on my Dillion Only powder and primers for that LOAD are anywhere near.

This is, and always has been the biggest issue with Rem Oil. It's about the worst crap there is for any kind of longevity as a firearms lubricant. Or even as a rust preventative.There are so many better products on the market, I wouldn't even consider Rem Oil. It's just too thin. About the best thing you can say about Rem Oil, is it's better than nothing... Which isn't saying much at all.

I love Remoil aerosol spray. As a cleaner (only). As a gun lube its awful. Just awful. Its mostly a solvent that dries up and disappears within hours. Which is why I love it as a cleaner. I blast the barrel, slide, and frame out with it and all the crud just comes pouring out. Hit it with some air from a compressor and its clean and dried off.

Once it I have wiped all the Remoil off I use an actual gun oil.

In the days of corrosive primers, and some military surplus ammo still fits in that category, hot water was really important to get the salts out of the barrel.

Just make sure all the water is driven off with compressed air, and the gun is properly lubricated to make sure you don’t cause corrosion.

Yes sir.

Easy to wash away corrosive salts with hot water.. That is one reason i keep ballistol handy. mixes with water.

I have one AK I rebarreled with an RPK barrel that is very accurate with a very corrosive brass Yugo surplus ammo. It gets cleaned after every session.

It was my off duty gun/back up gun. I think I paid $150 for it at a pawn shop in East Orange NJ....a few weeks before I entered the NJSP Academy . Came with a simple holster and 12 rounds of .38.
Found out it belonged to a Newark NJ detective. Must of served him well. Certainly served me well.

This was purchased new by a friend of mine in 1969, (or thereabouts). I doubt he put a box of shells through it. I bought it from him in 1972, and have had it ever since. I have the original grips for it.

I'm not sure what year Colt went with the shrouded ejector rod on the Detective Special, but the earlier models were non shrouded like this one. This was similar to the Colt "Cobra" Jack Ruby used to kill Lee Harvey Oswald with.

I believe the "Cobra" had an Aluminum frame, while the Detective Special was all steel.

There were 3 editions of the Detectives Special from 1927-1986.
I believe yours is a first edition=1927-1946.
Mine is a second edition=1949. The ejector rod on mine is a bit shorter.
The third edition =1973-1986 had the ejector rod shroud.
I had similar grips as those on mine briefly...I think they were Herretts? They fit fine but we're too thick to use a speed loader so I switched back to originals.

Just make sure all the water is driven off with compressed air, and the gun is properly lubricated to make sure you don’t cause corrosion.

I've used soapy water some. But these days I just run a few patches soaked with windex (ammonia cleaner) through the bore before cleaning as normal after shooting corrosive ammo. Haven't noticed any issues in my stuff after cleaning this way.

A lot of water in that Windex, too. Not knocking your cleaning regimen, just saying that the water is needed to remove the salts, and the ammonia helps, too.
