Renault D22 1957 : old recommandations VS now.

Hi,
In the mid-50s, Renault apparently recommended SAE 10W in winter and SAE 20 (or 20W-20 ?) in summer. (SAE 30 for tropical climate)

For the MWM AKD112Z engine.

Many use 15W40 in these engines now. This is the cheap mineral oil found in European hypermarkets.
But it doesn't seem right to me. Too viscous.

In an engine that hasn't been renovated, a little worn. Would 10W30 or 5W30 full SAPS oil be more suitable than 15W40?

Are the SAE grades of the mid-50s comparable to more recent SAE grades ?

All I know is that the SAE J300 evolved after the harsh winters of the early 1980s, to ensure pumpability in extreme cold.

Thank you.

I can't find any old technical data sheets for these old oils.

With the age of this engine I'd imagine some wear & a higher grade of oil could work. 5w or 15w-40 should still work well along w/10w-30. I'm not sure if the definition of a 10w or 20w mono grade from the 1950's would compare to today's grades.

Hi

A summary of all the changes in engine oil viscosity grades over the years.

To summarize, a 1950's grade can be replaced by today's equivalent, or better, if the engine is in good condition or refurbished.

More viscous in summer is perhaps better, as they are hotter these days.
"10W20" => 0W30, 5W30 or 10W30.

As SAE 30 was for tropical climates.

Full SAPS for safety.
