Removing Engine Sludge - 1995 Toyota T100

I just got a 1995 Toyota T100 with the 2.7 liter four cylinder in on a trade. No check engine light. But a.cornucopia of engine sludge is what greeted me when I opened the valve cover.

I'm thinking about having a machine shop hot tank the valvetrain. That will be for starters.

I'm not sure if it needs the timing chain replaced too. It's noisy at start up. But it dissipates about after about 10 miles and I'm not detecting any skipping.

Any thoughts?

I'm not a fan of touching sludge, period. How many miles are on this Toyota? It sounds like more investigating is required to pinpoint the noise; it could be an exhaust leak for all we know.

Are you going to pull the head off so as to hot tank it? I presume the oil pan would come off too, right? those would be the two places where the most sludge is.

But then what might live in the oil control rings?

If the engine runs OK with the sludge then I would not go crazy trying to deal with the sludge. Just move to VRP and reasonable OCI.
He took it in on a trade--he wants to flip it I bet. But... he doesn't want to drop a turd into some customer's lap. Guessing on my part. Fix up and sell, with the hope of making it reasonably good, all known problems fixed (as-is sale regardless).

And finding sludge is a known issue. By posting pics of it he's forced his hand into doing this right. :)

I guess he could sell and disclose this... but it sounds like something that would not sell. Worst case, yank the engine and swap. I bet it's rust free (not that I'm jealous in any way).

Yep if it's just sludge and not hard I'd leave it alone and use high ester oil or VRP or even Rislone for moderate (5k mile ish) intervals for the rest of its life.

Yes, often times a small exhaust manifold leak at the flange can cause a tick that will go away as the flange gets hot, expands and seals the leak until it cools again. Gasket could have failed or the flange has warped.

Wow. I feel sorry for that poor engine.

Off the top of my head. Get what you can off valvetrain and drop/clean pan

Short oci hdeo: couple hundred miles maybe, then change filter and add rislone for second half of this oci.

VRP for 1500mi, 3000mi, and 2x 4000mi.

If you’re keeping the truck, that would be my plan or similar

LiquiMoly sludge remover. 100 miles of soft driving’s would be interesting to see results with valve covers off.

BG Dynamic engine restoration kit is what I would try. $300 or so and it might reduce that sludge, I've seen it perform miracles.

Truck is probly worth less than half that.
In that case, scrape off and vacuum out what you can see, change the oil with whatever and send it. If it's burning oil, maybe do a piston soak with Berrymans B12. As for the start up rattle, seems like I recall something about the exhaust VVT gears or solenoids or something. Might Google that for ideas.

Have you checked out this thread?

He’s has great success and thankfully still gives updates.

You'd be surprised. Most T100 in my area have half-a-million miles, every body panel is dented, yet people still asking $5000-$7000. And the worst part is - other people are buying at such asking price, likely due to nostalgia of having or wanting a T100 back in the day... As result prices stay quite high on these trucks, especially with the 2.7L.
