One of the ingredients in Hoppe's no. 9 is isoamyl acetate. This is a commonly used in foods as artificial banana flavor.

For many of us, it's very much a memory-evoking smell as it's been on the market for quite a long time. I grew up cleaning guns with it.

If you want something stinky but effective, try Hoppe's Benchrest no. 9. It's a copper fouling remover. It legitimately stinks to high heavens, but will get copper out like few other solvents will. Most of the commercial copper solvents out there have a similar composition and thus a similar smell profile, and all work about equally well-I just use the Hoppe's product because I like supporting the brand.

BTW, it's interesting to see the reaction that Hoppe's provokes in people vs. Ballistol. I personally prefer the smell of Hoppe's, but don't mind the licorice-like(anise oil) smell of Ballistol. I know folks who can't stand one or the other, or either for that matter.

Most people just use mineral spirits.

You really really got my hopes up.. then shattered my dreams. Lol.

I cleaned up a brand new one last night. Tried the suggested brake cleaner and wow it worked like a charm. Didn't take me much longer to clean up than normal.

What did you get?

My first real 1911, been reading and shopping for months. It's an American Classic II by Metro Arms in 38 Super. Did not get to shoot today as hoped, but it seems to be an awful lot of gun for the money.
