I'm not understanding the issue. Seems their fence is on their property. What is the problem? Are you upset they mow some of your lawn? I had a neighbor that mowed half my backyard. He even fertilized it. Less for me to mow.

I don't get the problem,. I don't know the rules where you are, but around here it is expected that a fence goes ON the property line.

What don't you specifically see? You should expand on your statement by saying that it is then philosophically OK for them to mow 15 feet into my land.

Is that what you are trying to say?

my neighbor and I have a "blurred" property line, and we are good friends. He mows my ditches, and I mow his...

I guess my solution would be to get to know them, and start mowing the same area - no reason not to help them out

Could you rephrase that? I am not sure what you are saying when you specify "mowing the same area". We know each other well. They grease us all the time with cookies and cake during a pandemic. No wonder.

First issue: the fence; it’s legal and would be considered by most to be adequately away from your property line to be considered a “good neighbor fence”.

Second issue: the neighbor mowing 15’ over your property line. Adverse possession usually only kicks in after 15+ so as long as you start maintaining it, you’ll be fine. I’d just start mowing down your line when you are out there, even if he had just cut it as well. Eventually they should get the hint and stop mowing it. Same thing was happening at my place but the neighbor was mowing roughly 50’ over the line and had started using my second driveway like they owned it because my house was abandoned/unoccupied for three years before I got to it.

This post makes sense. It must be a regional thing. I concur with everything except their recognizing the property line by mowing in the same area. It is just "too difficult" for them to loop around their house to do the other side.

They aren't getting the hint even though I mow the same area.

I thought your problem was with where the fence was. Fence or no fence they really shouldn't mow that far over the line if that upsets you.

If their house and fence are on their property, I'm missing how you "lost a good chunk of useable land"? Because they're mowing it?

Ed
I can't enjoy that end of my property because if I want to hang out over on that end of the property they let their dogs out to start barking in addition to their mowing it. However the emphasis would be on the former point.

Sorry, the way the original post was phrased it seems like you are wondering exactly where your property line is, and that they might be mowing on "your side of the line"

In my current home I mow my neighbor's ditches and into their property line...and in my previous home (in the city) I built a fence in my backyard, but mowed two widths outside of the fence line as well as fertilized and weed control. I wasn't trying to claim any additional land, just be a good neighbor.

Adverse possession requires that they are also paying the taxes for said portion of land and that no one else is rightly laying owning claim to it. No way that would apply in this case.

If it bothers you enough, you either need to inform them of the issue, and/or pay for a survey and fence.

No, I know exactly where my property line is per the survey. They are definitely mowing onto my side.

Your situation is interesting.
