I think I know the answer to this, but I an going to ask it anyway in case there is some obscure reason i have missed. I have removed three small bags of felt from our Ford escape. Thee were located behind the rear interior panels in the back. Looks just like green garbage bags with a felt type product inside. Used for sound deadening obviously. I sprayed no-drip oil rustproofing in this area above the rear wheels.

I have not noticed any difference in road noise, so I want to throw these out and not install them. Any reason why I should keep this stuff?

Ford has been using bags of insulation for years. I had it in my 1996 Thunderbird above the rear wheels also.

I wouldn't keep the bags for anything.

If it isn't any louder, you could discard them.
Still, Ford put them there for a reason.
They didn't incur additonal cost unless these bags actually made the vehicle quieter.
It may be that noise is increased for those sitting in the back seat.
Also, it may be that they were intended to attenuate a very high or low frequency sound that would be vaguely irritating over time.
